1ST QUARTER LIVING THINGS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT THE RESPIRATORY AND CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS: Diseases Learning Competencies Infer how one’s lifestyle can affect the functioning of respiratory and circulatory systems Learning Targets I can identify different types of diseases and disorders associated with the respiratory and circulatory system. I can discuss different lifestyle choices that may affect the respiratory system and circulatory system. I can provide measures to prevent the impact of the unhealthy lifestyle in the respiratory and circulatory system. LET’S REVIEW!!! Activity: Gallery Walk You will be grouped into 7 Each group will be assigned 1 respiratory or circulatory diseases Further instruction will be given after you recieved your assigned topic. DISEASES AND DISORDERS/////////>??/??//// /// AFFECTING THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM COMMON COLD COMMON COLD A contagious infection of the respiratory tract. Usually caused by a viral infections, called rhinovirus. Its symptoms are sneezing and runny nose because of excessive nasal secretion, nasal congestion, and mild fever. INFLUENZA INFLUENZA Also known as flu, is highly contagious. It is caused by viral infection. Its symptoms are fever, body ache, chill, headache, muscle pain, fatigue, and runny nose. PNEUMONIA PNEUMONIA A swelling of tissues in one or both of the lungs. Usually caused by a bacterium, but it may also develop due to complications caused by viral infections like chickenpox and measles Its symptoms are cough with yellow, green, or bloody sputum, fever and chills, chest pain, and rapid breathing. TUBERCULOSIS TUBERCULOSIS Respiratory disease caused by a bacterium known as mycobacterium tuberculosis. Symptoms are coughing up blood, fatigue, fever, weight loss, and loss of appetite. ASTHMA ASTHMA A breathing disorder It is a chronic ailment caused by inflammation of the airways, bronchi, or bronchioles. Its symptoms include coughing, wheezing, breathlessness, and tightness of the chest. BRONCHITIS BRONCHITIS An inflammation of the lining of the bronchi. May be acute or chronic It is caused by viral lung infection, but can also be triggered by industrial pollutants and tobacco smoke Symptoms are cough, production of clear, white, yellowish, or green sputum, fatigue, and fever. EMPHYSEMA EMPHYSEMA A disease that occurs when the alveoli in your lungs are destroyed. It turns the alveoli into large, irregular pockets with holes in the inner walls. It is caused by prolonged exposure to respiratory irritants such as tobacco chemicals and air pollutants such as factory or coal. The main symptom is shortness of breath. EMPHYSEMA Chonic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD It is associated with a group of lung diseases: emphysema, asthma, and chronic bronchitis. Its common caused is smoking Symptoms: progressive and long-term obstruction of airflow that makes breathing difficult. LUNG CANCER LUNG CANCER A type of cancer that develops in lungs. It is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths. A person who smokes or is exposed to secondhand smoke has a high risk of having lung cancer. Symptoms are nagging cough, sometimes with blood, shortness of breath, chest pain, hoarseness, and weight loss. DISEASES AND DISORDER AFFECTING THE CIRCULATORY ALTHEROSCLEROSIS It is a disease of the arteries that is caused by a cholesterol buildup called plaque inside the walls of the arteries. Symptoms: confusion or difficulty talking or understanding others, dizziness, loss of balance or lack of coordination, Severe headache, weakness or numbness in the face, arm or leg, usually on one side of the body and vision problems in one or both eyes. STROKE STROKE It is a disorder that results from a blockage caused by hardening of arteries in the brain or in the neck vessels leading to the brain. Symptoms: Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination. CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE It is caused by the narrowing of one or more coronary arteries which results in atherosclerosis (the thickening of the lining of the artery. Arteries narrow when there is a build-up of cholesterol and other material called plaque. As it grows, the heart muscles can’t get enough oxygenated blood which can lead to chest pain or heart attack. HYPERTENSIVE HEART DISEASE HYPERTENSIVE HEART DISEASE It is elevated blood pressure, results from the narrowing of the arterioles, the smallesr arteries of the body. Symptoms: Chest pain, Shortness of breath, Palpitations, Dizziness, Fainting, Stroke, and Sudden cardiac death. Rheumatic Heart Disease It is a heart disease that usually occurs in children. It usually begins with untreated bacterial infection caused by Sreptococcus pyogenes. This bacterial toxin causes the body to trigger an immune reaction and the patient suffers a rheumatic fever. This further causes damage to the heart, specifically the inflammation of the innermost layer of the heart knoen as endocarditis. Hemophilia The blood does not clot properly Bleeding thus persists. People with this genetic condition are called hemophiliac or bleeders. The inherited disease is transmitted by the mother through the X chromosomes and male offspring are mostly affected. The disease is caused by the lack of one of the plasma protiens associated with clotting. Symptoms: early detection is recognized in small children whose small wounds would bleed profusely and can trigger an emergency situation. ANEMIA ANEMIA A condition where you don’t have healthy red blood cells. This causes inadequate oxygen supply to your tissues. There are several causes of anemia such as blood loss, iron deficiency, or diseases related to bone marrow. Symptoms are fatigue, pale skin, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, dizziness, cold feet and hands, and headache. LEUKEMIA LEUKEMIA A cancer of bone marrow that produces white blood cells The production of white blood cells becomes uncontrollable and increases in number than red blood cells. Symptoms are fever, weakness, frequent infections, weight loss, easy bleeding, and bone pain. Lifestyles and Harmful Substances that can affect the functioning of the circulatory and respiratory systems -Cigarette Smoking -Good and Healthy diet -Stress -Sedentary Lifestyle -Heavy alcohol consumption -Regular exercise
