Anxiety Disorders: Phobias Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) - chronic long-lasting anxiety with no known cause Panic disorder - panic attacks (severe and sudden onset of extreme anxiety, can last from 30 seconds to 30 minutes) Free-floating anxiety, anxious all the time expecting something agoraphobia, scared to go outside OCD obsessive compulsion disorder - obsession: a repeating thought - compulsion: an act or behavior linked to the obsession for the purpose of reducing anxiety brought on by the obsession - SSRI: increases serotonin, serotonin is a neurotransmitter a brain chemical PTSD Post-traumatic stress disorder - Flashbacks - Triggers - Hyper aroused - Difficulty sleeping, nightmares - Difficulty handling emotions 2. Afluctual disorders: Depression: - Decreased motivation - Lost of interest - Thoughts of suicide - Self-blame - Low self-esteem - Profound isolation & sadness - Fatigue - Sleeping too much or too little - Decreased self-care Causes: - learned helplessness, learn to be helpless, try things to help yourself and it keeps failing - Biological model - - decrease in brain chemicals (serotonin, norepinephrine) -genetic - Psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, -early childhood conflicts or loss that was unresolved (divorce, death or close relative, neglect) feeling angry - current loss, inward-turned anger, can work through depression by outwardly expressing anger Mania: - mood is elevated - Experiencing euphoria - Little need for sleep - Hyperactive - Feeling invulnerable - Feeling grandiose - Easily frustrated - Lose the ability to stay focused Bipolar Disorder: Mania & Depression - Cycles can last weeks or months - Experiences mania, dips into depression, then mania increases, etc - Very little stability 3. Dissociative disorders: Dissociative Identity disorder/multiple personality disorder: - Core personality - Alters (to escape) - From extreme abuse - Fugue- memory loss, runs away Treat disorder to have the core personality to remember the abuse and help them live with it 4. Psychotic disorders: Schizophrenia: Affects 1% of the world's population Genetic 5-10% of people have a parent with schizophrenia 50% chance if your identical twin has it ⅓ of people have 1 or 2 episodes and then it stops ⅓ of people are on drugs ⅓ are untreatable Symptoms: Delusions - Delusions of grandeur, ex thinking that you are jesus - Thinking there's special messages just for you - Persecution, paranoid Hallucinations - Vision - Taste - Touch - Smell - Hearing(auditory), most common hallucinations Disturbance in - Thinking, cognition - loose associations - Emotions, affect - none, inappropriate - Behaviors - frozen(waxing flexibility), inappropriate Causes: - Genetics - Dopamine hypothesis, too much dopamine - Stress hypothesis, genetic predisposition, activating events that trigger it 5. Personality disorders Borderline Personality Disorder: - Tumultuous relationships that are filled with problems - Huge fluctuations in mood Narcissistic personality disorder: - Over sense of self impotence Antisocial Disorder: - Lack of conscience/guilt - No sense of right and wrong Histrionic P.D: - Seeking attention 6.
