PRINCIPLES OF COMPOSITION PRESENTATION BY: KYLE ANDREW PANGAN OVERVIEW This topic delves into the fundamental principles of composition in art and design, guiding students on how to effectively arrange visual elements to achieve balance, emphasis, and harmony. Mastering these principles is crucial for creating engaging and visually striking designs across various mediums, including photography, graphic design, painting, and digital media. THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPOSITION IN GUIDING THE VIEWER’S EYE AND CREATING MEANING. Visual hierarchy involves organizing and prioritizing design elements to guide the viewer's eye and control the order of information perception. By arranging elements thoughtfully, you can effectively communicate your message and engage your audience. BALANCE BALANCE Balance is a fundamental principle of design in art, alongside contrast, movement, rhythm, emphasis, pattern, unity, and variety. It pertains to how the elements of art such as line, shape, color, value, space, form, and texture interrelate in a composition, ensuring that no side appears heavier than the other, thus achieving visual equilibrium. SYMMETRICAL BALANCE Symmetrical balance in art can be either a mirror image, where one side is an exact copy of the other, or approximate, where the two sides have slight variations but remain quite similar. RADIAL BALANCE Radial balance involves arranging visual elements around a central point, often resulting in a circular pattern. This type of balance is typically symmetrical, with elements radiating outward from the center. As these elements spread out, they create an orderly pattern that can enhance depth, suggest movement, and establish a focal point in the image. EMPHASIS EMPHASIS The focal point of a design is the element that captures the viewer’s attention. Artists often create emphasis in one area by contrasting it with other sections, using differences in size, color, texture, shape, and more. EMPHASIS MOVEMENT MOVEMENT Movement refers to how a viewer's eye is guided through a composition, often leading to areas of emphasis. This can be achieved using lines, contrasting shapes, or colors within the artwork. In this piece, the eye flows upward through the rippling surface of the water to the two paddlers, and then shifts to the contrasting textures and colors of the foliage in the upper half of the image. THE RULE OF THIRDS RULE OF THIRDS The rule of thirds is a widely used and easy-to-master guideline in photography. It involves dividing an image into thirds both horizontally and vertically. The four intersection points and lines created by this division are ideal locations for placing subjects or strong compositional elements, resulting in a balanced and impactful image. THE RULE OF THIRDS NEGATIVE SPACE NEGATIVE SPACE Negative space refers to the area around and between the subject of an image. These spaces create actual shapes that share edges with the positive shape. Equally important as the subject itself, negative space helps define the boundaries of the positive space and adds balance to the composition. LEADING LINES LEADING LINES Leading lines can be either very prominent or quite subtle. In some images, they may go unnoticed, yet they still direct the viewer's eye. Understanding the definition of leading lines in photography can help clarify how they are used within a composition. FRAMING FRAMING Framing in photography is a compositional technique that highlights the subject by using elements within the scene to create a frame around it. This approach not only directs the viewer's attention to the main point of interest but also adds visual interest to the scene, making the photo more compelling. GOLDEN RATIO GOLDEN RATIO The golden ratio, also known as the golden mean, divine proportion, or golden section, is a mathematical concept that describes a relationship between two quantities. This ratio is present when the ratio of the two quantities is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger quantity. THANK YOU!
