Summary
This document provides a presentation on design principles, including rhythm, variation, balance, and proportion. It includes examples of these principles in music and visual arts, as well as explanations and diagrams to support understanding. The presentation also covers contrasting design elements and various design types such as symmetry, asymmetry, and radial balance. It is suitable for learning design principles or a follow-up to an introductory lesson on art and design.

EXPERIENCES December 5 Question & Answer Portio n "Alright, who remembers their very first time drawing or coming across a piece of art that stuck with them? What was it like? Was it just doodles on paper, or did it actually mean something to you? Share your story was it messy, magical, or maybe even lifechanging?" 03 OBJECTIVES December 5 Objectives To create visually appealing, cohesive, and effective compositions that communicate the intended message 04 Guide the viewer’s attention, and evoke the desired emotional or aesthetic response. December 5 Guessing Game The Last Supper A mural painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, dated to c. 1495–1498, 03 December 5 Guessing Game Super famous, especially in photography, art, and design. 06 December 5 Guessing Game Is the technique of making a specific part of a composition. 07 Subordination The last Supper A mural painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, dated to c. 1495–1498, A design principle where artists deemphasize certain elements to ensure the main subject or focal point stands out in a composition. 08 RULE OF THIRDS The rule of thirds is super famous, especially in photography, art, and design. The rule of thirds means that the subject is not centered; rather, the main focal point can be to one side or at the top or bottom of the image. EMPHASIS Is the technique of making a specific part of a composition stand out as the focal point by using contrast, color, size, placement, or detail. 09 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN RHYTHM AND VARIATION RHYTHM Rhythm A regular pattern of elements, such as sounds, movements, or visual elements, creating a sense of flow and structure. Examples: Music : A steady beat in a pop song, where the drums and bass consistently hit on the same intervals. Visual Arts : The repeating pattern of arches in a Romanesque building's facade. 10 RHYTHM Music 11 RHYTHM Visual Arts Architectural Design 12 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN RHYTHM AND VARIATION Variation Variation A change or difference in elements within a rhythmic pattern, adding interest, contrast, and complexity. Music : A song's bridge section, which might change tempo, melody, or instrumentation compared to the verses and chorus. Visual Arts : A painting featuring a repeating geometric pattern, but with variations in color intensity or size of the shapes within the pattern 13 Variation Music 14 Variation Visual Art Art Jaw Fair 15 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN BALANCE AND PROPORTION Balance The visual or physical distribution of weight, elements, or forces within a composition, creating a sense of stability and harmony. It's about creating equilibrium, not necessarily symmetry. Examples Visual Arts : A painting with a large dark shape on one side balanced by several smaller lighter shapes on the other. The visual weight is distributed evenly, even though the shapes aren't identical. Architecture : A building with a heavy, imposing base balanced by a lighter, more delicate upper structure. The visual weight is distributed to create a sense of stability. 16 Collage of various Artworks Balance Visual Arts A bright and colorful modern-style painting of a vibrant red tree in a serene landscape 17 A scene from a religious and historical painting Balance Architecture The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the right bank of the river Yamuna in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. 18 The Lotus Temple is a Baháʼí House of Worship located in New Delhi, India. PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN BALANCE AND PROPORTION THREE TYPES OF BALANCE Balance SYMMETRICAL BALANCE a mirror image balance. If you drew a line down the center of the page, all the visual elements on one side of the screen are mirrored on the other side. ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE occurs when several smaller visual elements on one side are balanced by a large visual element on the other side or smaller visual elements are placed further away from the center of the screen than larger visual elements. RADIAL BALANCE all elements radiate out from a center point in a circular fashion 19 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN BALANCE AND PROPORTION SYMMETRICAL BALANCE 20 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN BALANCE AND PROPORTION ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE 21 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN BALANCE AND PROPORTION RADIAL BALANCE 22 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN BALANCE AND PROPORTION Proportion Proportion The relative size and scale of elements within a composition, influencing the overall visual impact and harmony. It's about the relationship between parts and the whole Examples Sculpture : A human statue where the head is proportionally smaller than the body, reflecting realistic human anatomy. Graphic Design : A poster where the text size is proportionally smaller than the main image, guiding the viewer's eye to the focal point. 23 Proportion Sculpture A scene from a film titled 'Nevertheless, That Man Owns the Sculpture 24 This sculpture appears to depict The Rape of Proserpina (or Pluto and Proserpina), a famous Baroque masterpiece by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Proportion Graphic Design 25 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN UNITY AND HARMONY Unity Unity and harmony are both principles of design that contribute to creating a cohesive and visually appealing artwork, but they have distinct roles. Harmon y is the combination of unity and variety, where all parts of a design work Harmony together to create a pleasing, cohesive whole. It is achieved when individual elements, such as colors, shapes, or textures, are related and complement each other, ensuring consistency and balance. Harmony avoids harsh contrasts or clashing components, focusing on creating a visually pleasing and unified effect. 26 Unity Harmony 27 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN DEPTH AND PERSPECTIVE DEPTH AND PERSPECTIVE Shows three-dimensionality of a space through the use of perspective lines and vanishing points CONTRAST A design principle that uses the elements of value to add depth and dimension. Light also plays an important role in creating good contrast 28 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN DEPTH AND PERSPECTIVE DEPTH AND PERSPECTIVE 29 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN DEPTH AND PERSPECTIVE CONTRAST 30 The principles of design are guidelines that help artists and designers arrange elements like lines, shapes, and colors to create visually appealing and effective compositions. Key principles include balance, harmony, emphasis, movement, and unity, ensuring clear communication and avoiding clutter. Though the exact list may vary, commonly recognized principles such as balance, contrast, and rhythm often overlap due to their interconnected nature. PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN 31 THANK YOU!
