CHAPTER 7 THE GLOBAL INTERSTATE SYSTEM 1 A state is a territory with its own institutions and populations. Four (4) Elements of State Territory (geographical area) Population Government (enforces laws, levies taxes, its own currency, postal services, and so on.) Sovereignty Internal Sovereignty - It refers to the state's ability to order and regulate the activities of all people, groups, and institutions. External Sovereignty - Sovereign equality with all other states- it must also have the authority and capacity to enter into treaties and other agreements with other states. A nation can be defined as a population who shares a similar culture and ideas. A nation is a group of people who have a strong sense of unity and common consciousness. Benedict Anderson, termed nation as an "imagined community.” It means that the country allows one to feel a connection with a community of people even if he or she will never meet them all. For example, when you cheer for Filipino athletes at the 2019 SEA Games, it is not because you know them personally. Rather, you imagine your connection as members of the Filipino community. NATION-STATE – IS A SOVEREIGN STATE WHOSE CITIZENS OR SUBJECTS ARE RELATIVELY HOMOGENEOUS IN TERMS OF FACTORS SUCH AS LANGUAGE OR COMMON DESCENT. ACCORDING TO CLAUDIO ET AL.
