What is Organisational Behaviour? •Not easy to define •The 'people' side of organisations •How to manage people in organisations •Why do people act as they do in organisations •The impact of management on workers and society What is Organisational Behaviour? • Wide-ranging area that draws upon numerous disciplines • OB has no ‘correct’ answers • Managers’ and employees’ perspectives • How to manage but also the impacts of management on worker and society (critical perspective) • Focuses on individuals, groups and teams and an organisation as a whole What is Organisational Behaviour? • Complex active processes in which people participate formally and informally in ways shaped by organisational roles and power • Systematic study of what people think, feel and do around organisations Some questions we ask on this module: • • • • • Why do people find change difficult? How can you motivate people? Why do teams sometimes fall out? Can businesses really be run in ethical ways? Can managers really control the workers hearts and minds? • Can work be creative? • Many students, particularly those with an interest or background in science or engineering, tend to have reservations about completing a unit in such ‘a fuzzy and unquantifiable subject’ as OB.
