Chapter 1 Introduction to Management Presented By: Dr. Anas Fundamentals of Human Resource Management, 10/e, DeCenzo/Robbins Learning Outcomes At the end of this chapter, you will be able to: Describe the basic functions of management. Identify where in an organization managers are located. Discuss the challenges people encounter as they become first time managers. Describe the role managers adopt to perform the basic functions of management. Outline the competencies managers must have to be effective. Four Main Functions of Management Planning – a formal process whereby managers choose goals, identify actions to attain these goals, allocate responsibility, measuring the success of actions, and revise plans accordingly. Organizing – the process of deciding who within the organization will perform the tasks to achieve the common goal. Controlling – is the process of monitoring performance against goals, intervening when goals are not meet, and taking corrective action. Functions of Management-cont…. Leading and developing employees 1. Leading – the process of motivating, influencing, and directing others in the organization to work productively to achieve the goals. 2. Developing employees – the task of hiring, training, and rewarding employees in an organization. Types of Managers 1. General Managers – responsible for the overall performance of the organization. 2. Functional Managers – responsible for leading a particular function or sub-unit within a function. Ex: Finance Manager, Sales Manager, Marketing Manager Units: Finance Office, Sales Office, etc. 3. Frontline Managers – who manage employees who are themselves not managers. Interpersonal roles – involve interacting with other people inside and outside the organization. 2. Informational roles – ability to collect, process, and disseminate information. 3.
