SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Course Outline HLE 2201: FRENCH 2 Lecturer: Dr. Richard Arina Okonda Phone: 07 33 40 29 12 Email: [email protected] Consultation time : students can consult the lecturer on Wednesdays 12.15pm - 1.15pm (or on appointment) Aim French 2 is a second in a sequential series of 4 French language courses. The course intends to provide students with a basic grounding in French so as to enable then to communicate effectively in socio-professional contexts. Learning Course Outcomes By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Order a meal at a restaurant. 2. Give advice, orders, instructions. 3. Buy an item. 4. Describe means of transport. 5. Reporting/narrating present, future and past events. 6. Understand announcements at the train station. 7. Understand the cause of an event in a written text. 8. Understand a written informative text. 9. Write simple personal letters, short, simple notes and messages relating to matters of immediate needs. 1|Page 10. Understand and write an informative text. 11. Discussing French culture, history and politics. 12. Lectures will be conducted in French using participatory and communicative approaches as well as audiovisual material. 2. Lectures will be used to introduce materials on the formal aspect of the module. Handouts will be provided occasionally for core topics. It must be noted that handouts are not sufficient by their very nature and the student will be required to generously supplement handout material. Students are encouraged to take course notes and use other resource materials available in the library and on the Internet. 3. Discussions will form an integral part of the course 4. Failure to hand in these on time will result in deduction of marks. Assignments to be given throughout the semester are provided in the course outline. They are indicative and could change at the discretion of the lecturer. They shall be done in an assignment book. For research assignments, students are encouraged to select a theme of interest pertaining French culture or civilization e.g the French revolution, the French national football team; a football player; French food; French wine; French music etc Policies Classes 1. Punctuality is important 2. Active participation in class discussion is essential and highly encouraged. 7|Page 3. Students are requested to refrain from signing the attendance register on behalf of colleagues who are not present. Assignments and /or course work 1. Plagiarism is a serious offence. If detected in any form in course work and assignments, the following will apply: a. In partial or non-serious cases (such as not citing whole word-for-word quotes) half the total possible marks of the assignment are duly struck off. b. In serious cases (such as whole word duplication of a paper) a zero policy will apply i.e all offending assignments will be awarded a mark of zero. Note: the level of seriousness referred to above is at the discretion of the lecturer. Appeals are certainly possible through relevant channels. 2. Notwithstanding the above, collaboration in course work is certain encouraged as this promotes team spirit and group synergy as long as originality is preserved. 8|Page
