PHYSICAL EDUCATION INTRODUCTION In this unit, the students taking PATH-FIT 1 – (Physical Activity Towards Health and Fitness) as a required subject will comprehend better about the meaning of Physical Education and the coverage of the course. Physical Education: Definition, Goals, Objectives and Functions Definition of Physical Education According to Webster’s Dictionary “Physical education is a integral part of education which gives instructions in the development and care of the body ranging from simple calisthenic exercises to a course of study providing training in hygiene, gymnastics and the performance and management of athletics games”. According to Columbia Encyclopedia “Physical education and training, is an organized instruction in motor activities that contribute to the physical growth, health and body image of the individual”. And Central Advisory Board of Physical Education and Recreation defines “Physical education as an education through physical activities for the development of total personality of the child to its fullness and perfection in body, mind and spirit”. Physical Education is an integral part of the educational program designed to promote the optimum development of an individual physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally through total body movement in the performance of properly selected physical activities (Andin,1988). Physical Education came from the Latin words “physica,” which means physics and “educatio,” which means the training of the bodily organs and powers with a view to the promotion of hearts and vigor (Wikipedia,2004). LEGAL BASES OF TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES SETTING 1901 Physical exercise was one of the subjects introduced in the public schools and regular program of athletics was developed. 1920 Physical Education was made a required subjects in the curriculum of all public schools 1937 Physical Education was made curricular subject in the secondary school curriculum LEGAL BASES OF TEACHING PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES SETTING 1969 The school of Physical Education and Sport Development Act of 1969. FUNCTIONS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION Biologic Function- refers to the enhancement of the individuals` growth and developments through body movement Integrative Function- refers to the personality integration achieved through participation in properly selected physical activities Social functions- refer to transmitting values and standards that are consistent with the needs and ideals of the society. OBJECTIVES OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION A. Physical Development Focus is on the acquisition and development of physical skills which can increase one ’s capability to enjoy lifetime recreational pursuits. This is attained through regular exercises and participation in varied vigorous activities. Regular physical activity and good physical fitness help enhance the quality of life in many ways. B. Mental Development Through physical education activities, learners acquire knowledge and understanding of the rules and strategies of the games, sports and dance instructions. Varied activities, skills and game s in physical education help students develop their ability to analyze body movements, skill and game situation. C. Emotional Development Physical Education activities provide opportunities for self-expression and emotional mastery. People who have more positive feeling about physical activities are said to have more positive balance of feelings which increases and develops self-confidence, self-reliance and self- control. Positive character traits like courage and discipline are most likely to become part of an individual’ life. D. Social Development Physical activity often promotes the opportunity to be with the other people. Through social- experience, many appreciate the importance of physical education activities. Through active participation, students develop positive and desirable traits like cooperation, sportsmanship, friendliness, good leadership, respect for others and honesty in group competition. E. Spiritual and Moral Development Physical education activities provide the development of inner self and soul. Experiencing these activities help students discover a personal meaning and purpose in life. These also lead to the appreciation of what is good and beautiful Thank You☺ Thank You☺
