It constitutes, in the overall literary landscape, a large stream than that written in Spanish, a much smaller than that written in the vernacular languages like, Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilonggo, Ilocano, Waray, Pampango, Pangasinan, Bicol, but certainly the most visible one because of exposure in the educational system and its accessibility through publications. ROLE OF LITERATURE LITERATURE -isa creation of human experience that tells about people and our world. - Literary works is a reinvention of the imagination. We create meanings that help us live. ESSENCE OF LITERATURE - Literature reflects the various experiences, ideas, passions of human beings in their daily life that express on several forms and styles of literary works - Since literature directly derives from human life, it can increase our knowledge and experiences about human problems included values, morals, culturs, and human interests. TYPES OF LITERARY GENRE DRAMA ESSAY POETRY SHORT STORY DRAMA -Comes from the Greek word “dran” which means “ to act or to do”. TYPES OF DRAMA ACCORDING TO THEME TRAGEDY COMEDY TRAGEDY - Is a form of drama in which events lead to the downfall of the main character, often a person of great significance, like a king or hero. Ex: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare SUBGENRES OF TRAGEDY MELODRAMA TRAGICOMEDY MELODRAMA - Is a tragedy where you exaggerate sensational and romantic topics to play with your reader’s feelings and emotions. Ex: The Knaves of Shakespeare SUBGENRES OF COMEDY SATIRE BURLESQUE FARCE COMEDY OF MANNERS SATIRE - Is a comedy play that takes a comedic look at people and current events while at the same time attempting to make political or social statement like pointing out corruption. BURLESQUE -Is a comedy play that tries to make people laugh by caricaturing the spirit of the serious works, or by the ridiculous treatment of their subjects. FARCE -Is a generally nonsensical, overacted comedy play that often uses slapstick humor. COMEDY OF MANNERS -Is a comedy play that satirizes the manners and pretentiousness of a social class or several classes, and often uses stereotypes. TYPES OF DRAMA ACORDING TO LENGTH  FULL-LENGTH PLAY  ONE-ACT PLAY  TEN-MINUTE PLAY FULL-LENGTH PLAY -Also known as evening- length play runs from 70- 80 minutes to about 2 hours. ONE-ACT PLAY - Can play from 15 to 45 minutes. TEN-MINUTE PLAY -Is a very short play with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It is limited to 10 minutes, and on paper, it is actually ten pages or less. ELEMENTS OF DRAMA PLOT CHARACTERS THEME DIALOGUE MUSIC/ RHYTHM SPECTACLE PLOT -Refers to the action, the basic storyline of the play. CHARACTERS Each character in a play - has a personality of its own and a set of principles and beliefs. TYPES OF CHARACTERS PROTAGONIST ANTAGONIST ROUND CHARACTER FLAT CHARACTER THEME -Refers to the message that is intended to be expressed through the story. DIALOGUE -Refers to the words written by the playwright and spoken by the characters in the play. FORMS OF DIALOGUE DIALOGUE SOLILOQUY MONOLOGUE ASIDE DIALOGUE - Is the conversation between two or more characters in a work of literature. SOLILOQUY -Is like a monologue but is spoken when no one else is onstage. MONOLOGUE -Is when one characters delivers a speech to convey his/her thoughts although other characters may remain on stage in scene. ASIDE Are words spoken in a - play for audience to hear, but supposed not to be heard by other characters. MUSIC/RHYTHM -Refers to the rhythm of the actors voice as they speak which helps establish mood, characterize, and lend variety. SPECTACLE -Is the most immediate element which is appropriate and distinctive in a play. This refers to the visual elements of a play. ESSAY -An analytic, interpretative, or critical literary composition usually much shorter and less systematic and formal than a dissertation or thesis and usually dealing with its subject from a limited and often personal point of view. TYPES OF ESSAY ARGUMENTATIVE EXPOSITORY NARRATIVE DESCRIPTIVE ARGUMENTATIVE - Forming an opinion via research - Building an evidence- based argument EXPOSITORY - Knowledge of a topic - Communicating information clearly NARRATIVE -Creative language use -Presenting a compelling narrative DESCRIPTIVE -Creative language use -Describing sensory details POETRY - Poetry literature that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm. TYPES OF POETRY NARRATIVE POETRY DRAMATIC POETRY LYRIC POETRY TYPES OF NARRATIVE POETRY EPIC BALLADS METRICAL TALE DRAMATIC POETRY -Is a form of poetry that is written in verse and meant to be recited in public or acted out. LYRIC POETRY -Consist of a short poem that often has musical qualities and conveys the writers personal emotion. TYPES OF LYRIC POETRY SONG SONNET ODES ELEGY IDYLL SHORT STORY -Is a fictional prose narrative that is typically shorter that a novel. It focuses on a single plot, a limited number of characters and a specific setting. Lo-a is an artistic or creative expression of the Ilonggo folks. MYTHS Myth Include Narrative of Heroes, deities and mythological creatures. These myths were transmitted through oral tradition, handed down through generations guided by spiritual leaders or shamans and community elders. LEGEND Legend is a traditional story that describes the origin of things and the world. This also explains the supernatural events, mysteries and cultural tradition. EPIC Epic is a long narrative poem, which is usually related to the heroic deeds of a person of an unusual courage and paralleled bravery.
