What is Literature? ✔ It represents culture, traditions, language of people. ✔ A body of written works. The name has traditionally been applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence of their execution. Why Literature is important? ✔ It provides a kind of blueprint to human society. ✔ It gives insight and context to the world societies. ✔ It serves as an introduction to world a new world of experience. BRIEF HISTORY OF PHIL. LIT. ✔ Philippine Literature is associated with the Philippines and includes the legends of pre-hisrory, and the colonial legacy of the Philippines, written in both Indigenous and Hispanic languages. Most of the notable literature of the Phil. was written during Spanish period and the first half of the 20th century in Spanish language. ✔ Phil. Lit. is written in Spanish, English, Tagalog and after native languages. 1 PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD ✔ Consisted of early Filipino literature passed down orally, oral pieces have a communal authorship it was difficult to trace the orginl author of the piece since oral literature did not focus on ownership rather on the act of storytelling itself. ✔ It showed certain elements that linked the Filipino culture to other Southeast Asian countries.
