# Definition of Terms ## Bodily Sensations - Physical reaction when experiencing emotion ## Impulses - Irrational behavior ## Triumphant - When one overcomes difficulties ## Hindered - Blocking or struggling in a situation # Emotions - A subjective reaction to experience. - Emotional response of an individual towards an experience. - A part of everyday existence. - Accompanies success and failures. - Essential ingredient for the family # Physiological Changes Accompanying Emotions - Involuntary - Increased heartbeat and blood pressure. - Irregular or increased respiration. - Impaired digestion. - Perspiration increase # Infant - **1-3 Months:** - Love, fear, anger. - **6 Months:** - Aggression - **1 Year:** - Violent physical responses. - Tantrums. ## Concerns: - **01:** Concerned with nearby things that could satisfy his/her immediate physiological needs. - **02:** Tantrums are normal up to ages 4 or 5, used by the child to get he/she wants. - **03:** When needs are denied, the infant shows displeasure immediately in an intense manner. # Adolescents - **01:** Emotions are intense and unstable due to glandular changes and excessive parental restraints. - **02:** Will try to discard childish ways to form a new method of coping. - **03:** A difficult period for emotional and social development up until adulthood. # Adulthood - **01:** Emotionality slows down and eventually disappears. - **02:** Learn to have more control over their emotions. # Emotional Maturity - Emotional expression that are uncontrolled should be balanced. - Does not mean repression or elimination. - Emotional control refers to the modification of emotional expression by directing manifestations into useful and approved channels. # Positive Emotions - Shows positive affect/brought by good and acceptable experiences - Joy and happiness - Excitement - Love # Negative Emotions - Shows negative affect/brought by unwanted life experiences. - Anxiety - Sadness - Anger - Fear # Emotional Intelligence - **High emotional intelligence:** Leads to more motivation, empathy, and good interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. - **The awareness and ability to manage one's own emotions:** - **Poor emotional intelligence:** Can have difficulties in expressing their emotions and in interacting with other people. # Ways to Manage Emotions - **Proper Emotional Processing:** Assessing the proper emotional response for the situation rather than acting on impulses. - **Be Calm:** Controlling your own urges to react. - Our emotions are valid but our behaviors are our responsibility. # Thank You Very Much
