May not be held with NURS 1260. Registration is normally restricted to students in Year 2 of the program. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Compare and contrast an individual’s growth and development to expected physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development across the lifespan. 2. Describe an individual’s growth and development within the social context of family, school, community, and work. 3. Analyze current issues and research related to human growth and development. And, to start the process of thinking about how growth and development are impacted by current events. The focus will be on a current event or pop culture idea and an important topic to you. You can choose from the following life stages: Infant, Early and Middle (Including sexuality and sleep) CASE STUDY The purpose of the case study assignment is to integrate and apply the course concepts in a case study. For this assignment, you will demonstrate understanding by creating a case study. Explain the concept of human development 2. Explain the meaning and potential benefit of a lifespan perspective to the study of human growth and development 3. Identify the broad significance of knowledge of human development to the practicing nurse 4. Formulate a strategy for successful preparation for this course. Utilize the on-line learning resources available to students in this course CONCEPT 1- HUMAN DEVELOPMENT The expected changes in a human being from birth to death A complex and multi-focal set of changes both visible and invisible Includes 6 domains: The physical Motoric (bones, muscle & tissue) Social/emotional Cognitive Communication and Adaptive (self-care of maturation) (Giddens, 2017) DEVELOPMENT DESCRIBED As per Giddens (2021) - A sequence of physical, psychosocial, and cognitive developmental changes Consequence of integration of three aspects of change: growth, differentiation, & maturation What is normal? A person who demonstrates expected physical and developmental maturation and physiological abilities across the 6 domains that are associated with age (Giddens, 2017). Concept of plasticity or changes in the brain that occur due to experience. Plasticity in relation to development refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt in response to experience LIFESPAN PERSPECTIVE We must consider social, cultural and environmental influence. Understanding that change occurs in adulthood as well is vital to describing and understanding human development. WHAT DO WE KNOW FOR CERTAIN?? WHAT WE CAN EXPECT GROWTH What we know for sure: physical growth, differentiation and maturation Physical growth is quantifiable An increase in cell size and number results in increase in size and weight WHAT WE CAN EXPECT DIFFERENTIATION Universal human species cell specialization Results in changes in both structure and function Human Development in Two Minutes - YouTube MATURATION Acquisition of adult-like behaviours characteristics and features Goal is optimal function Increase in adaptability and competence CONCEPT-SCOPE-ATTRIBUTES NURSING CARE Concept (Development) – Development affects all aspects of individuals and thus directs our nursing care. Scope of Concept– The extent to which development impacts an individual Attributes Applied to Concept – qualities, characteristics and features SCOPE OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IS USUALLY … Embryological Infant Toddler Preschool Adolescent (scope refers to the range/extent/span of School concept) age Organized, progressive and predictable Young adult Middle aged adult Older adult Individuals vary in the time of onset for each stage, the length of time spent in each stage ATTRIBUTES (REFERS TO THE QUALITIES, CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES APPLIED TO THE CONCEPT – HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Normal development is described as an individual who is demonstrating expected developmental and physical maturation, physiological function and expected tasks for their chronological age within or across the developmental domains. Consider the meaning of range of normal E.G Examples refer to conditions that might lead to developmental delay/disorder THE NURSING ROLE IN DEVELOPMENT Important for the nurse to know when expected developmental progression in any area is not occurring so that interventions can occur to support the individual to promote optimal development Not all age norms will be followed dependent on multiple circumstances Be mindful of ageism the social clock Cultural safety in care CRITERIA (STANDARDS, PRINCIPLES, NORMS MEASUREMENTS REGARDING THE CONCEPT) Expected/Normal development Developmental level – stage of development For example - stage of epiphyseal long bone closure, post-puberty, peri-menopause Developmental Milestone – is an ability or specific skill that an individual accomplishes by a certain age range Both provide a basis for nursing assessment Use these criteria to guide our assessments (Normal=Expected) DEVELOPMENTAL ASSESSMENT STANDARDIZED TESTS A screening test is a test conducted in the absence of specific signs or symptoms of a problem. A screening test is used to assess aspects of development to detect potential delays or abnormalities. Leads to further specific assessment and intervention Examples: Denver developmental Screening Test (DDST - Infants and children). Assesses gross & fine motor, language, personal-social skills & milestones. Limitations include many false positives. Social-emotional assessment in children.
