Lecture 02: CITIZENSHIP AND VOLUNTEERISM Including Philippine Constitution, Filipino Core Values, RA. 8491 and Leadership Lecture 02: CITIZENSHIP AND VOLUNTEERISM Include: Philippine Constitution, Filipino Core Values, RA. 8491 and Leadership CITIZENSHIP Relationship between an individual and a state to which the individual owes allegiance and in turn is entitled to its protection. Citizenship implies the status of freedom with accompanying responsibilities. 1987 CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES ARTICLE IV : Citizenship SECTION 1. The following are citizens of the Philippines: (1) Those who are citizens of the Philippines at the time of the adoption of this Constitution; (2) Those whose fathers or mothers are citizens of the Philippines; (3) Those born before January 17, 1973, of Filipino mothers, who elect Philippine citizenship upon reaching the age of majority; and (4) Those who are naturalized in accordance with law. 1987 CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES ARTICLE IV : Citizenship SECTION2. Natural-born citizens are those who are citizens of the Philippines from birth without having to perform any act to acquire or perfect their Philippine citizenship. Those who elect Philippine citizenship in accordance with paragraph (3), Section 1 hereof shall be deemed natural-born citizens. SECTION3. Philippine citizenship may be lost or reacquired in the manner provided by law. SECTION4. Citizens of the Philippines who marry aliens shall retain their citizenship, unless by their act or omission they are deemed, under the law, to have renounced it. SECTION5. Dual allegiance of citizens is inimical to the national interest and shall be dealt with by law. 1987 CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES PREAMBLE We, the sovereign Filipino people, imploring the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, do ordain and promulgate this Constitution. GOOD CORE FILIPINO VALUES The Filipino value system or Filipino values refers to the set of that a majority of the Filipino have historically held important in their lives. Philippine values system includes their own unique assemblage of consistent Moral Codes Cultural Values Personal Values GOOD CORE FILIPINO VALUES As a general description, the distinct value system of Filipinos is rooted primarily in personal alliance systems, especially those based in kinship, obligation, friendship, religion (particularly Christianity) and commercial relationships. Faith and Belief in the Almighty God, Active Spirituality Respect for Life Order Work Concern for the Family and Future Generation Love Freedom Peace Truth Justice Unity Equality Respect for Law and Government Patriotism Promotion of Common Good Concern for the Environment GOOD CORE FILIPINO VALUES REPUBLIC ACT NO. 8491 AN ACT PRESCRIBING THE CODE OF THE NATIONAL FLAG, ANTHEM, MOTTO, COAT-OF-ARMS AND OTHER HERALDIC ITEMS AND DEVICES OF THE PHILIPPINES. F. Pledge to the Flag SECTION 25. The following shall be the Pledge of Allegiance to the Philippine Flag: Ako ay Filipino Buong katapatang nanunumpa Maka-Diyos, Sa watawat ng Pilipinas Maka-tao, At sa bansang kanyang sinasagisag Maka-kalikasan, at Na may dangal, katarungan, at kalayaan Maka-bansa. The state or fact of being responsible. 12 CORE VALUES Confidence or trust in a person or thing, belief in anything, as a code of ethics, standards of merit, the obligation of loyalty or fidelity to a person, promise, engagement. Honesty, fairness or integrity in one’s beliefs HONOR and actions. High respect, as for worth, merit or rank. A source of credit or distinction. To show a courteous regard for. “Honor keeps our name and our reputation clean.” 12 CORE VALUES The obligation or responsibility imposed on a person in whom confidence or authority is placed. Reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence. To permit to remain or go somewhere or to do something without fear of consequences. TRUST “Trust means they can count on us as both their advocate and their friend.” The power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without; autonomy; self- determination. The power to determine action without restraint. The state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. “Our dedication to clients is for freedom and hope for FREEDOM them all!” 12 CORE VALUES Truthfulness, sincerity or frankness. Freedom from deceit or fraud. The quality or fact of being honest; uprightness and fairness. “Honesty pays off. Those we work with know we will defend what we represent.” TRUST Adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty. The state of being whole, entire, or undiminished. A sound, unimpaired or perfect condition. “Insurance companies know our integrity gives us strength.” FREEDOM 12 CORE VALUES The quality of being just; righteousness, equitableness or moral rightness. Rightfulness or lawfulness, as of a claim or title; justness of ground or reason. The administering of deserved punishment or reward. The maintenance or JUSTICE administration of what is just by law, as by judicial or other proceedings. “Justice with fairness guides our battles, if need be.” The true or actual state of a matter. Conformity with fact or reality; verity. A verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle or the like. Actuality or actual existence. “What is not true disintegrates.” 12 CORE VALUES A group of people who are generally not blood-related, but who share common attitudes, interests or goals and frequently live together. A social unit consisting of one or more adults together with the children they care for. All those people considered as descendants of a common progenitor. A basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not. CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD CITIZEN HONESTY is the most important characteristic of good citizenship COMPASSION is the emotion that you feel when you genuinely care for other people and living things RESPECT for self and others is an important citizenship trait RESPONSIBILITY is the skill of becoming accountable and responding wisely DUTIES OF A GOOD CITIZEN Support and defend the Constitution. Stay informed of the issues affecting your community. Participate in the democratic process. Respect and obey federal, state, and local laws. Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others. WHAT IS A LEADER? A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. - John Maxwell WHAT IS A LEADER? A leader is an essential person. He is the one that leads the team or group to attain the goals that they have set. An essential part of directing the people to work is leadership. THREE TYPES OF LEADERSHIP AUTHORITATIVE– a type of leadership through fear DEMOCRATIVE – a type of leadership that practices the philosophy of management FREE – REIN – a type of leadership that just allows his followers to do what they want. The theory or practice of being a volunteer or of using volunteers, as, without pay, in social agencies, charitable organizations, etc. VOLUNTEERISM Benefits of Volunteering Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Gain confidence. Volunteering can help you gain confidence by giving you the chance to try something new and build a real sense of achievement. Make a difference. Volunteering can have a real and valuable positive affect on people, communities and society in general.
