FERNANDEZ, UAP, RMP JUNE 09, 2024 WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Any pipe that receives and conveys discharges of water closet, with or without the discharge from other fixtures to the house drain or house sewer is called Soil Pipe. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Generally, Waste Pipe is smaller than the soil pipe. Among the suspended materials found in the water waste are: 1. Grease 2. Lint 3. Matches 4. Hair 5. Garbage and many other objectionable substances. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Indeed, the improper use of plumbing fixtures can only result in waste line stoppage, and deterioration in the pipeline. The drainage installation of a plumbing system comprises three major components parts: ❏ Drainage ❏ Waste ❏ Vent Or simply called the DWV. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Drainage Pipe Refers to an installation that receives and conveys discharges from water closet with or without waste coming from other fixtures. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Waste Pipe Is any pipe that receives the discharge of any fixture except water closet. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Vent Pipe In a plumbing system, functions as air passage or conduit to ventilate the drainage and waste pipe installation. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Categorically, any pipe that receives and conveys human waste is affixed by the word ‘Soil’ such as, soil brach, soil stack, etc. Soil Branch. Refers to the horizontal pipe affixed by the word soil. The word soil connotes a pipe receiving discharges from water closet. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Soil Stack. Is a vertical pipe installation where the soil branches terminate. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE Soil Stack. Is a vertical pipe installation where the soil branches terminate. The pipe is called: ❏ Soil - it receives human waste from soil branch ❏ Stack - being installed vertically Otherwise, it will be classified as Waste Stack. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE CONSERVATIVE USE OF FITTINGS Pipe installations that fails or break to soon, may have been due to any of the following causes: 1. The use of too many fittings 2. The use of wrong type of fittings WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE CONSERVATIVE USE OF FITTINGS Recommendations: 1. Do not use short radius fittings on a vertical to horizontal directions or horizontal to horizontal changes. 2. Use long sweep fittings on horizontal changes. 3. For vertical to horizontal direction of changes, the Y and 45˚ fittings are most appropriate. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE CONSERVATIVE USE OF FITTINGS WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE CONSERVATIVE USE OF FITTINGS Recommendations: 4. The T fitting was designed for vertical run with lateral branches only. Its use on horizontal insta- llation will c r e a t e a t i l t e d o r c r o o k e d j o i n t connections called ‘Premature Waste Line Defects’ WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE LOCATION OF CLEANOUT The waste pipe installation must be provided with an ample number of cleanouts, strategically located, to be opened in case of pipeline trouble. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE LOCATION OF CLEANOUT Cleanout is a receptacle of the plumbing system acce- ssible on floor, walls, or ceiling. It is equipped with a plug or flush plate so designed as not to impair the aesthetical view of the room. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE LOCATION OF CLEANOUT The location of cleanout must be indicated in the plan. It should be sized equal to the diameter of the waste pipe, where it is to be connected. Cleanouts 706.1 Each horizontal drainage pipe shall be provided with a cleanout at: 1. Its upper terminal 2. Cleanouts 706.1.1 Cleanouts may be omitted on a horizontal drain line less than 1.50 meter in length unless such line is serving sinks or urinals. Cleanouts 706.1.3 An approved type of two-way cleanout fitting, installed inside the building wall near the connection between the building drain and building sewer or installed outside of a building at the lower end of the building drain and extended to grade, may be substituted for an upper terminal cleanout. Cleanouts 706.1.3 An approved type of two-way cleanout fitting, may be substituted for an upper terminal cleanout. Cleanouts 706.4 Each ninety 90 degrees cleanout extension shall be extended from a wye type fitting or other approved fitting of equivalent sweep. Cleanouts 706.6 Each cleanout, unless installed under an approved cover plate, shall be above grade, readily accessible, and so located to serve the purpose it is intended. Cleanouts 706.7 Each cleanout in piping 51 mm or less in size shall be installed so that there is a clearance of not less than 305 mm in front of the cleanout. Cleanouts 706.7 Each cleanout in piping larger than 51 mm shall have a clearance of not less than 0.45 m. in front of the cleanout. Cleanouts 706.7 Cleanouts in underfloor piping shall be extended to or above the finished floor or shall be extended outside the building when there is less than 0.45 m. vertical and 0.75 m. horizontal clearance from the means of access to such cleanout. Cleanouts 706.7 No underfloor cleanout in any residential occupancy shall be located more than 6.1 m. from an access door, trap door, or crawl hole. Cleanouts 706.11 When a hubless blind plug is used for a required cleanout, the complete coupling and plug shall be accessible for removal and replacement. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE GRADE OF HORIZONTAL DRAINAGE PIPING Horizontal drainage pipes shall be run in practical alignments and at a uniform slope between manholes of not less than 20 mm/m or 2% toward the point of disposal. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE GRADE OF HORIZONTAL DRAINAGE PIPING Where it is impracticalble to obtain a 2% slope due to the following constraints in: 1. Excessive depth of the proposed drainage line 2. Sructural and/or geological features of the terrain 3. Existing adverse in arrangements of building or structure. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE GRADE OF HORIZONTAL DRAINAGE PIPING Any such pipe or piping 102 mm or larger in diameter may have a slope of 10 mm/m or 1% provided it is first approved by the Administrative Authority. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE GRADE OF HORIZONTAL DRAINAGE PIPING Waste pipe must be of sufficient diameter to afford adequate velocity of flow in order to make them as nearly self-scouring as is practical. Trap Seal Loss occurs when the grade or slope of the pipe is increased from 2% to 4%. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE GRADE OF HORIZONTAL DRAINAGE PIPING Trap Seal Loss means the loss or escape of standing water inside the P-Trap. This is usually caused by siphonage induced by rapid flow of waste inside the pipe. It also referred to as Water Seal Escape. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE DETERMINING THE SIZE OF WASTE PIPE The waste pipe diameter shall be adequate enough to serve the installation of fixtures in a general way, but the best way is to fit the diamaters of commercial pipe into the fixture pattern in the most efficient manner. - Revised NPCP WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE THE UNIFORM PLUMBING CODE COMMITTEE’S FINDINGS ARE ENUMERATED BRIEFLY AS FOLLOWS: 1. By increasing the size of the drainage pipe, does not guarantee effective scouring action, or self-cleaning ability of the pipe. Self-cleaning ability is present, when the liqu i d a n d w a s t e i n s i d e t h e p i p e f l o w smoothly and simultaneously together. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE THE UNIFORM PLUMBING CODE COMMITTEE’S FINDINGS ARE ENUMERATED BRIEFLY AS FOLLOWS: 2. Water flow inside a larger pipe is relatively shallow. The solid waste does not flow on shallow water but tend remain a t t h e b o t t o m o f t h e p i p e. T h i s i s practically the most common cause of the many clogging problems of drainage installation. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE THE UNIFORM PLUMBING CODE COMMITTEE’S FINDINGS ARE ENUMERATED BRIEFLY AS FOLLOWS: 3. Drainage pipe must be of the right size to have a liquid flow o f a b o u t 5 0 % o f t h e p i p e d i a m e t e r. Meaning, that the following water inside the pipe must have a depth equal to 1/2 the pipe diameter. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE THE UNIFORM PLUMBING CODE COMMITTEE’S FINDINGS ARE ENUMERATED BRIEFLY AS FOLLOWS: 4. For instance, if the pipe is 100mm diameter, the water flow inside the pipe must have a depth of 50 mm to attain the scouring action. This is where the 2% slope becomes effective. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE THE UNIFORM PLUMBING CODE COMMITTEE’S FINDINGS ARE ENUMERATED BRIEFLY AS FOLLOWS: 5. On the other hand, too small pipeline is subject to overloading of flow. The tendency is to create back- pressure, siphonage, and floor flooding. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE THE FIXTURE UNIT See Revised NPCP. Table 7-2 Page. 80 WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE WASTE PIPE AND OTHER FIXTURE Waste Pipe is classified into two types depending upon the kind of fixtures it will serve. 1. Direct Waste 2. Indirect Waste WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE WASTE PIPE AND OTHER FIXTURE 1. Direct Waste Is one with terminal directly connected to the plumbing system. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE WASTE PIPE AND OTHER FIXTURE Different Types of Fixture Served by Direct Waste 1. Urinals 6. Drinking Fountain 2. Bathtub 7. Laundry 3. Lavatories 8. Laboratory 4. Sink 9. Hospital Fixture 5. Showers WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE WASTE PIPE AND OTHER FIXTURE 2. Indirect Waste Refers to a connection with terminal not directly connected to the plumbing system. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE REVISED NATIONAL PLUMBING CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES SECTION 801. INDIRECT WASTE CONDITIONS 801. 1 No evaporative cooler, air washer or similar air condi-tioning equipment shall have any drain pipe in connection therewith, directly connected to any soil, waste and vent pipe. Such equipment shall be drained by means of indirect waste pipes. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE REVISED NATIONAL PLUMBING CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES SECTION 801. INDIRECT WASTE CONDITIONS 801.2 No cold storage room, refrigerator, cooling counter, compartment, receptacle, appurte- nance or device used for the storage or holding of food or drink and no dishwashing or culinary sink in any food preparation room used for soaking, washing or preparing ready- to-serve food shall be directly connected to any soil, waste or vent pipe. WASTE PIPE AND SOIL PIPE REVISED NATIONAL PLUMBING CODE OF THE PHILIPPINES SECTION 801. INDIRECT WASTE CONDITIONS 801.3 The airgap for drainage shall be not less than 25 mm between the plumbing fixture, appliance or appurtenance outlet and the rim of the floor sink or receptor.
