Study Notes

Waste Pipe and Soil Pipe

  • Waste pipe is classified into two types depending on the kind of fixtures it will serve.
  • Soil pipe receives human waste from soil branch.
  • Stack pipe is installed vertically and is classified as a Waste Stack if not.

Conservative Use of Fittings

  • Using too many fittings or the wrong type of fittings can cause pipe installations to fail or break too soon.
  • Recommendations for using fittings:
    • Avoid short radius fittings on vertical to horizontal directions or horizontal to horizontal changes.
    • Use long sweep fittings on horizontal changes.
    • Use Y and 45° fittings on vertical to horizontal direction changes.
    • T fittings are designed for vertical run with lateral branches only and should not be used on horizontal installations.

Location of Cleanout

  • Cleanout is a receptacle of the plumbing system accessible on floor, walls, or ceiling.
  • Cleanout must be indicated in the plan and sized equal to the diameter of the waste pipe.
  • Cleanout must be readily accessible to the plumber in case of waste line stoppage.
  • Location of cleanout must be indicated in the plan.

Revised National Plumbing Code of the Philippines (Section 706. Cleanouts)

  • Each horizontal drainage pipe shall be provided with a cleanout at its upper terminal and every 15 meters length.
  • Cleanouts may be omitted on horizontal drain lines less than 1.50 meters in length unless serving sinks or urinals.
  • Cleanouts may be omitted on short horizontal drainage pipes installed at a slope of 72 degrees or less from the vertical line.
  • An approved type of two-way cleanout fitting may be substituted for an upper terminal cleanout.
  • Each cleanout extension shall be considered as drainage piping.
  • Each cleanout for an interceptor shall be outside of each interceptor.
  • Each cleanout, unless installed under an approved cover plate, shall be above grade, readily accessible, and so located to serve the purpose it is intended.

Cleanout Size and Clearance

  • Size of cleanout and threads per 25.4 mm:
    • 38 mm pipe: 38 mm cleanout, 11-1/2 threads per 25.4 mm
    • 51 mm pipe: 38 mm cleanout, 11-1/2 threads per 25.4 mm
    • 64 mm pipe: 64 mm cleanout, 8 threads per 25.4 mm
    • 76 mm pipe: 64 mm cleanout, 8 threads per 25.4 mm
    • 102 mm pipe and larger: 89 mm cleanout, 8 threads per 25.4 mm
  • Minimum clearance in front of the cleanout:
    • 305 mm for pipes 51 mm or less in size
    • 450 mm for pipes larger than 51 mm in size

Uniform Plumbing Code Committee's Findings

  • Increasing the size of the drainage pipe does not guarantee effective scouring action or self-cleaning ability of the pipe.
  • Water flow inside a larger pipe is relatively shallow, causing solid waste to remain at the bottom of the pipe.
  • Drainage pipe must be of the right size to have a liquid flow of about 50% of the pipe diameter.
  • For instance, if the pipe is 100 mm diameter, the water flow inside the pipe must have a depth of 50 mm to attain the scouring action.
  • Too small a pipeline is subject to overloading of flow, creating back-pressure, siphonage, and floor flooding.
