CULTURAL VARIATION AND SOCIAL DIFFERENCES Cultural Variations Differences in social behaviors that different cultures exhibit around the world. Social Differences Differences among the individuals on the basis of social characteristics and qualities. Gender - socially-constructed characteristics Socio-economic Status - more or less socio-economic privileges Exceptionality - personality, communication, intellect, physical appearance Question: Do you believe that people who are differently abled and underprivileged are still able to contribute to society? IDENTITY A distinctive characteristic that defines an individual or is shared by those belonging to a particular group. People may have multiple identities depending on the groups to which they belong. Society is the structure, while culture guides the way people live. POLITICAL SCIENCE Focuses on fundamental values of equality, freedom, and justice and its process linked to the dynamics of conflict, resolution, and cooperation. POLITICS - associated with how power is gained and employed to develop authority and influence. Why do we need to care about politics? Should “gender identity” be added to anti- discrimination laws?
