11/7/2024 1 Medical Terminology 2 Medical Terminology Language used to describe the human body, its functions and procedures used in medicine AKA language of healthcare Basic components of medical word Roots Prefixes Suffixes 3 Roots Provides the core meaning of the word Often of Greek or Latin origin Can appear anywhere in the term More than one root can have the same meaning Pulmon- and plneumon- A root plus a combining vowel creates a combining form 4 Combining Forms Roots are often joined to other roots and/or suffixes that begin with a consonant by a combining vowel Pneum- means air (pneum/o) -Thorax means chest Air in the chest cavity = pneumothorax Hem- means blood (hem/o) Blood and air in the chest cavity – hemopneumothorax Not used when combining root word to suffix that begins with a vowel Any vowel, “a,” “e,” “i,” “o,” “u,” can be used as combining vowel 5 Suffixes Group of letters positioned at the end of a medical term Suffixes can have more than one meaning If a suffix begins with a consonant, a combining vowel is used 6 Types of Suffixes Diagnostic Produces medical term that is a diagnosis or a procedure or test to identify the nature of the illness -crit, -gram, -graph, -lysis, -oma, -rrhage Surgical Produces medical term that describe the invasive surgical procedure performed on the body -centesis, -ectomy, -plasty, -stomy, -tripsy 7 Types of Suffixes 1 11/7/2024 Pathologic Produces a medical term that describes a symptom or sign of a disease process -algia, -ectasis, -edema, -emesis, -genesis, -itis, -oma, -osis, -pathy, -penia Adjectival Suffixes 28 suffixes that all mean pertaining to -ac, -al, -ale, -alis, -ar, -aris, -ary, -atic, -ative, -eal, -ent, -etic, -ial, -ic, -ica, -ical, -ine, -ior, -iosum, -ious, -istic, -ius, -nic, -ous, -tic, -tiz, -tous, -us Noun Suffixes Don’t fall under other categories but maintain the root as a noun -iatry, -ician, -icle, -ist, -istry, -ole, -ule 8 Prefixes One letter or group of letters added to beginning of the root Prefixes of position: Ante-, anti-, circum-, endo-, epi-, exo-, hyper-, hypo-, inter-, intra-, para-, peri-, post-, pre-, retro-, supra-, trans-, ultra- Prefixes of Number and Measurement Bi-, brady-, di-, eu-, hemi-, macro-, micro-, mono-, multi-, pan-, poly-, primi-, quadri-, tachy-, tri- , uni- Prefixes of Direction and Location Ab-, ad-, ante-, post-, sub-, syn- 9 Any Questions? 2
