Meal Planning Meal planning is the organization of the preparation of meals. These meals must meet the requirements of those people who are to eat them and be suitable for the particular occasion. When planning meals, you need to consider the following: Nutrients for a balanced meal The planning process should ensure that a day’s meals provide all the nutrients a person needs. One way of achieving this is to select food from the six food groups of the Caribbean. A typical meal might include: Fish from the food from animals group rice from the staples group Carrots from the dark green leafy and yellow vegetables group String beans from the legumes group mango from the fruit group. Some fats and oils may be used during the preparation of this meal. It is not always to have all the food groups represented in one meal. However, the other groups can be included in other meals during the day. Needs of people eating the meals The type of food are method of preparation depend on the needs of individuals. Children and adolescents require energy rich foods. As people become older they require less energy given food. Some people may need special diets because of illness or other medical conditions. For example: people suffering from diabetes need a sugar free diet. This must be taken into consideration when planning meals.
