The 2 halves of the palate do not fuse properly. May be associated with a cle; lip. A cle; lip and palate is the most common facial birth defect in the UK, afec8ng around 1 in every 700 babies. Modern surgery produces excellent aesthe8c and func8onal results. It can range from a small notch to a wide gap that reaches the nose. Some8mes it can be hidden by the lining of the roof of the mouth (the mucosa).
