Music of East Asia I. Objectives At the end of the lesson the students can : listens perceptively to music of East Asia; analyzes musical elements of selected songs and instrumental pieces heard and performed; and performs music from East Asia with own accompaniment. The region of East Asia embraces the countries China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan. Considered as one of the world’s populated region. CHINA The most dominant and influential in terms of culture. One of the world’s oldest civilizations. Land Area: 3,600,000 square miles World third largest nation. Great influence with other Asian countries. Elements of Chinese Music 1. Pitch/ Tonal System- Chinese music is in pentatonic scale. The used of the scale is based on some symbolic attributes: Kung- the primary tone, associated with the Emperor. Shang- tone associated with the Minister. Chih-the tone associated with the State. Chaio- tone associated with the People. Yu- tone with significant Chinese objects. Elements of Chinese Music 2. Timbre (Vocal)- thin and nasal. 3. Meter/Rhythm-duple meter. 4. Texture- homophonic texture. Types of Chinese Vocal Music 1. Religious Music- classified into two: Buddhist and Taoist Music which are religious chants or rituals played for some ceremonies (salvation and memorial) a.Buddhist Music- known as Sankrit Music. It is usually referred to as “chanting music, covering verses,hymns and liturgies.” b. Taoist Music- influenced by regional folk music and it is used in ceremonial rituals like Buddhist music. 2.The Art Song- Xiaoling is a vocal music of the 12th and 13th century based on the poetry of Qu. Soloist usually performs with wooden clapper as accompaniment. 3.Narrative Music- Zhugongdiao is one of the siginificant types of narrative songs. It is based on romantic legend. 4. Chinese Folk Music- Shange is a mountain song. Chordophones Erhu- a two-stringed fiddle instrument which is one of the most well-known in the Hu-qin family. It is also called “Chinese Violin”. Chordophones Banhu- it is also known as the following: bonghu, pang-hu,qin- hu,etc. It is the leading musical accompaniment in Bang-zi ballads specifically for local operas in Central China. Chordophones Pipa- this instrument is created for plucking. It has a short neck and made of a wooden belly. Chordophones Ruan- it is also known as the Chinese guitar and moon guitar and it varies in shape. Chordophones Yueqin- it came from ruan but it has a thinner sound with a short neck and flat sound box. Zither Family Guqin- is a seven- stringed instrument in which has a long and slender body made from a pine tree. Zither Family Zheng-is one of the earliest Chinese musical instruments made from bamboo. It has 21 stretched strings. Zither Family Kongho-the instrument is similar to the harp and aside from the right hand technique , it can also be played by the left hand in vibrato. Idiophones Pengling-percussion intruments consisting of two bells made of bronze. It adds beauty to rythmic instruments in music ensembles and theater. Idiophones Muyu- is made from mulberry wood and is used by striking it to produce sounds. It is used ion Buddhist chants. Aerophones Dizi- is considered a traditional Chinese flute which can be played through double or triple tonguing, fluttered, and tonguing and fluttered. Aerophones Xiao- it is also known as a wind instrument which is considered as a long flute. It is played in Chinese classical music for solo music. Aerophones Sheng- one of the oldest Chinese instruments and is also called as the Chinese mouth organ. It consists of 13-17 bamboo pipes in various lengths that are placed together. Chinese Musical Compositions 1. Ya-yiieh- it is the music played in court of China. 2. Yiieh-hsuan-played in the garden facing the hall together these two dances. 3. Wen-wu- civil war. 4. Wu-wu- military compositions. 5. Tangko- performed inside the hall. A chamber song in honor to the king and his ancestors. Chinese Folk Song “Mo Li Hua” A Chinese folk song which means a jasmine flower. It describes the purity and fragrance of the jasmine flower. Sung in nasal voice. It is moderate in tempo and range. The texture is homophonic and it uses syllabic phrasing. ??? I. Performance Task In a group you will sing Mo Li Hua. For the first round sing it with the original tune and for the second round sing it with your improvised tune. To make it creative, use some improvised instruments that can be found in your house, for example: spoons and forks, plates, empty containers, etc...
