Why is it important to stay active and do physical activities? How can physical activities help us stay healthy and strong? PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WHO defines physical activity as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. Physical activity refers to all movement including during leisure time, for transport to get to and from places, or as part of a person’s work or domestic activities. How the physical activities can benefit your health and well-being? Benefits of Physical Activity in children and adolescents, improved physical fitness, cardiometabolic health, bone health, cognitive outcomes, mental health and reduced body fat; in adults and older adults, reduced risk of all-cause mortality, risk of cardiovascular disease mortality, incident hypertension, incident site-specific cancers, incident type- 2 diabetes, and falls and improved mental health, cognitive health, sleep and measures of body fat; Outdoor Play Outdoor Play - is play that takes place outside and includes concepts of risky play and nature play. The Benefits of Outdoor Play Outdoor play is beneficial for children beyond the physical activity it provides. It helps them socialize, understand their bodies better, engage in imaginative play and enjoy the outdoors. EXAMPLES OF OUTDOOR PLAY (FILIPINO TRADITIONAL OUTDOOR GAMES) IRING-IRING SIKSIK BULAK HALAP-HALAP IRING-IRING o LAGLAG PANYO Iring- is a Bisaya word for cat hence this is a version of the Cat and Mouse game. In the USA, this game is known as Duck Duck Goose, in Ghana it is Antokyire and Pesek is the name of this game in Bulgaria, IRING-IRING o LAGLAG PANYO Players: 20 or more players Playing area: outdoor/indoor Materials: handkerchief Skills: running, alertness, endurance Fitness components: endurance agility speed IRING-IRING o LAGLAG PANYO Directions: 1. The group will choose an "it" or taya. 2. Once an "it" or taya is chosen, all players sit in a circle facing the center. 3. The "it" or taya stays outside the circle with the handkerchief. He/ She either walks or runs outside the circle and secretly drops the hanky behind one of the players. 4. Players in the circle must carefully observe if the "it" or taya still has the handkerchief. If not, they will put their hands behind and try to "feel" if the hanky is there. IRING-IRING o LAGLAG PANYO 5. If the player is unaware that the hanky is dropped behind him/ her, and the "it" was able to run around in full circle reaching the player with the handkerchief behind him/her who is still seated and unaware, this player is tagged and becomes the new taya. 6. A player who is alert and finds out the hanky is behind him/her, ent to quickly picks it up and runs after the "it", both trying to reach the sooner vacant place in the circle. The one who was not successful in seating in the empty seat will be the "it" for the next game. IRING-IRING o LAGLAG PANYO Rules: 1. Only the "it" stays outside the circle, the rest of the plates should be seated in the circle. 2. Players in the circle should be alert and observant to the actions of the "it." 3. The designated running area should be strictly followed. SIKSIK BULAK ( HIDE THE COTTON ) Siksik Bulak or Hide the Cotton is a quiet game. It involves playing with a pack of cotton and guessing who has it. Players should try not to let the "it" guess who holds the pack. Players: any number of players Playing area: outdoor/indoor Skills: intuition, sensitivity Materials: a pack of cotton SIKSIK BULAK ( HIDE THE COTTON ) Fitness components: endurance flexibility Directions: 1. The group will choose an "it" or taya while the rest of the players sit down in a straight line. 2. The "it" is turned around facing the opposite direction from the players, A leader of the game hands a pack of cotton to the first in the line and tells them to hide the bulak. The cotton pack may be hidden in a pocket,, in the shoe, or sock or any place among the players. SIKSIK BULAK ( HIDE THE COTTON ) 3. When the leader says, "ready," everyone keeps quiet and still so as not to give the "it" any clue about where the cotton is hidden. 4. If the "it" guesses correctly the location of the cotton, the player who hid the cotton is the next "it". The former "it" joins the line. Rules: 1. Players in the line should silently agree who will keep the pack of cotton. 2. They should be silent while the "it" tries to guess who has the cotton. 3. To make it a bit challenging, a time limit can be given so the "it" tries his/her best to guess the location of the cotton as quickly as possible. HALAP-HALAP ( BLINDFOLD) The word halap in Tagalog means hope or feeling of expectancy. Hap-hap or halap-halap is a popular traditional game that involves being blindfolded and guessing the name of the person who was caught. Players: any number Playing area: outdoor Materials: handkerchief Skills: running, alertness, good memory Fitness components: agility, speed, endurance HALAP-HALAP ( BLINDFOLD) Directions: 1. A circle is drawn on the ground around five feet in diameter. 2. An "it" or taya is chosen. 3. The rest of the players stand and hold hands facing the inner circle. 4. The "it" or taya stays inside the circle at the middle portion and blinfolded. 5. At the signal, the "it" tries to capture a player, while the rest of the players either make noise to distract him/her or be quiet so as not to get caught. 6. When the "it" captures a player he/she needs to guess the name. If the guess is correct then he/she becomes the "it". HALAP-HALAP ( BLINDFOLD) Rules: 1. Only the "it" stays inside the circle, standing and facing the circle. 2. Players can be quiet or make noise. 3. Safety and caution is advised. No pushing of players or "it".
