OBJECTIVES WHEN WRITING A LITERATURE REVIEW Based on primary sources only (mainly what you only cite) Results of cited studies Conclusions of cited studies Avoid secondary sources (very rare if used) Introductions of cited studies Literature reviews of cited studies Use current references (e.g., the past five years) Older, landmark studies ( example, 1985(example) box in blocks (original norm data)) may be included to provide a hist Do not use resources that advertise a product, vendor, or business References and studies cited should be taken from scholarly work Peer-reviewed, high-quality journals not predatory journals make sure its actually research Textbooks for a broad base understanding to extract Appropriate articles or cases may be reported in the popular literature( for example npr things that are not peer reviewed scientific journals) ; these should be used sparingly Present an overview and critical evaluation of relevant work Tell a clear story* leading to justification for your study and design Methodical interweaving of existing resources that supports the purpose of the study Must be organized in a logical & sequential manner (GUIDING READER) Since it summarizes current writings, generally written in present tense Not the place for your opinions ( LITERATURE REVIEW ) No more than a couple sentences w out dropping a citation. Avoid reporting studies as distinct entries (not rational or efficient) "Nolinske (2021) identified the three most and least important functions of a mentoring relationship for the mentor. Horatio (2019) found that mentors help socialize proteges into an organization. Gertrude’s 2023 study showed mentors gave proteges a network of resources." Literature review becomes a boring list of separate resources Shifts reader's focus away from the concepts Concepts are the priority, not who said what (content themes topic guide you to organize. Based on the clumps of info that are relevant ) find stuff from different articles and clumping can be clustered or compared to strengthen or refute a position "Three important functions of a mentoring relationship are to socialize proteges into an organization (Horatio, 2019), provide them with resources (Gertrude, 2023) and explain department politics (Nolinske, 2021)." This kind of phrasing facilitates flow among concepts Makes it easier for the reader to grasp key similarities and differences represented by many sources To do this you need to... dissect your resources, reorganize them, and integrate (i.e., synthesize) the information have an intimate knowledge of your subject and its component parts Components of a written Literature Review (subjective) Introduction Overview of the topic Background and scope of the study Description of the population Methodology of your literature searching process Review of related studies, including their designs and results Critical appraisal of current related research and knowledge on the subject Integration of the works you have reviewed Synthesis based on content Justification for your study and design (the Purpose) LITERATURE REVIEW LENGTH, OR...HOW LONG DOES IT NEED TO BE?
