Introduction to urinary apparatus Performs vital excretory functions and eliminates the organic waste products 3 Mar ni FH, Tallitsch RB, Nath JL. Human Anatomy. 8th Edi on. T12-L3. Right kidney lower than the left kidney. 4 2. Kidneys Anatomical relationship RIGHT KIDNEY -Superiorly: suprarenal gland and liver. -Anteriorly: liver. -Medially: descending part of the duodenum. -Inferiorly: right colic flexure and small intestine. 5 2. Kidneys Anatomical relationship LEFT KIDNEY Superiorly: suprarenal gland, stomach and spleen. Anteriorly: Pancreas. Laterally: left colic flexure and descending colon. Inferiorly: jejunum. 6 2. Kidneys Nielsen M, Miller S. Atlas of Human Anatomy. Chichester, UK: John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2011. 7 2. Kidneys - Each kidney has a smooth anterior and posterior surface covered by a fibrous capsule. - Hilum. - Each kidney consists of an outer renal cortex and an inner renal medulla. - Renal columns (part of the cortex) dividing the renal medulla into discontinuous aggregations of triangular-shaped tissue: renal pyramids. - Renal papilla: contains the openings of the papillary ducts draining the renal tubules. 8 2. Kidneys - The minor calyces receive urine from the papillary ducts. - Two or more minor calyces unite to form a major calyx, and two or three major calyces unite to form the renal pelvis. ti ti ti Mar ni FH, Tallitsch RB, Nath JL. Ureters Muscular tubes that transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Retroperitoneum. Anatomical relationship with Psoas major muscle. They enter the pelvic cavity. 11 4. Urinary bladder 12 5. Urethra 13 5. Urethra 14 6. Vascularisation - The left renal artery is higher than the right renal artery. - The right renal artery runs posteriorly to the inferior cava vein. - Renal veins anterior to the arteries. 15 BIBLIOGRAPHY Drake RL, Vogl AW, Mitchell AWM.
