Maylon Learning Objectives 1 2 3 Identify figures Recognize the Write an essay of speech; importance of applying sensory literary devices. images. Figurative Language Language that has meaning beyond the literal meaning; also known as “figures of speech.” Example: The boy was a brave as a lion in the jungle. SIMILE Simile is an expression comparing one thing to another using the words “like” or “as”. Examples: 1. He ran like a cat, lightly and quietly. Her blue mood passed as quickly as an afternoon rain shower. 2. Jose Rizal is like a star. 3. Life is like a box of chocolates. METAPHOR A metaphor is a figure of speech that implicitly compares two unrelated things, typically by stating that one thing is another. Examples: 1. Life is a rollercoaster. 2. Jose Rizal is a star. 3. The classroom was a zoo. PERSONIFICATION Personification is a figure of speech that is used to attribute human characteristics to something that is not human. Examples: 1. The sun kissed me while I was clicking a picture. 2. The flowers danced to the wind. 3. The newspaper headline glared at me. What is your idea about Sensory? IMAGERY Imagery is a literary device used by a writer in his attempt to describe something. It is the language used by a poet to build some images in the minds of the readers. It is also known as “Sensory Images” because they appeal to senses. LET’S TRY 1. The campfire crackled quietly in the night. 2. The light, flowery scent of my sister’s perfume invaded my nostrills. 3. Brightly colored hot air balloons filled the clear sky. 4. As I carefully swallowed each delicious morsel, I savored the rich and creamy chocolate bar. 5. This desk has a hard, smooth surface. Sensory Images 1. Imagery using VISUAL or SIGHT - describes what we see. It may include color, shapes, size, and pattern. 2. Imagery using AUDITORY or SOUND – describes what we hear. It may include enjoyable sounds, noises, and even silence. 3. Imagery using TOUCH or TACTILE - describes what we feel or touch. It may include texture, temperature, touch, and movement. Sensory Images 4. Imagery using TASTE or GUSTATORY - describes what we taste. It may include sweetness, sourness, saltiness, spiciness, and savoriness. 5. Imagery using SMELL or OLFACTORY - describes what we smell. It may include fragrances, and odors. ACTIVITY Instruction: Write a 200-word essay incorporating sensory imagery. The essay should be written on one whole sheet of yellow paper. RUBRICS CONTENT 5% - Contains 10 and more sensory images in the essay with illustrative content demonstrating strong development and sophisticated ideas. FOCUS 5% - Focused, purposeful, and reflects clear mental representations of ideas. ORGANIZATION 5% - Sophisticated arrangement of content with 5 or more subtle transitions.
