INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this lesson, pre-service teachers should be able to: 1.Discuss the basic components of instructional planning correctly through group discussion (jigsaw); 2.Using the model, create a lesson guide accurately considering the different components. BTI: 1.1.1 Demonstrate content knowledge and its application within and across curriculum teaching areas. 3.2.1 Implement teaching strategies responsive to the learners’ linguistic, cultural, socio-economic, and religious backgrounds. 1.5.1 Apply teaching strategies that develop critical and creative thinking and other higher-order thinking skills. INTRODUCTION In this lesson, you will demonstrate your knowledge of preparing a lesson guide using the basic components of instructional planning of the English subject for the primary and intermediate levels in elementary and applying appropriate teaching strategies through your teaching demonstration practicum. THREE MAJOR COMPONENTS OF IP 1. Deciding what to teach 2. Deciding how to teach 3. Communicating realistic expectations DECIDING WHAT TO TEACH 1. Assessing learners’ skills 2. Analyzing instructional task 3. Establish the logical sequence 4. Considering contextual variables 5. Analyzing instructional groupings 6. Identifying gaps in actual and expected performance DECIDING HOW TO TEACH 1. Setting instructional goals 2. Selecting instructional methods and materials 3. Pacing instruction appropriately 4. Monitoring performance and replanning instruction COMMUNICATING REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS 1. Clear objectives 2. Learning materials 3. Active background knowledge 4. Direct instruction 5.
