INTRODUCTION In the previous lesson, we explored the different instructional models. These are the ADDIE, Kemp, and ARCS models. The elements in each model were identified and understood. These models will guide you in developing your own instructional plan. INTRODUCTION Teaching English at the elementary level could prove to be difficult especially if it is taught out of context. Language always exists in a communicative context. As such, teaching languages should also reflect this very nature. In this lesson, we are going to look into the thematic approach to instructional planning, and how you could use it to deliver instruction to your learners. THEMATIC TEACHING THEMATIC APPROACH It is the selection and highlight of the theme through instruction. It is interdisciplinary It highlights the relationships of knowledge across multiple academic disciplines. THEMATIC APPROACH Themes can be derived from various sources It is closely related to interdisciplinary instruction, project- based, and phenomenon-based STEPS IN EMPLOYING THEMATIC APPROACH 9 INTEGRATING DESIGNING ENCOURAGING CHOOSING A THE THEME WITH INSTRUCTIONAL PRESENTATION THEME THE EXISTING PLAN CURRICULUM (KORO & OKORO, 2016) CHOOSING A THEME CHOOSING A THEME Themes often involve a large, integrated system (such as a city, an ecosystem, and so on) or a broad concept (such as democracy, weather, and so on). Teachers often strive to connect the theme to the student’s everyday life. In some cases, students participate in choosing the theme or themes. INTEGRATING THE THEME WITH THE EXISTING CURRICULUM 13 INTEGRATING THE THEME WITH THE EXISTING CURRICULUM The teachers involved must organize the learning objectives of their core curriculum (both process skills and content knowledge) around the theme. In the study of a river basin, for instance, math might involve calculating water flow and volume; social studies could look at the nature of river communities; science might study phenomena like weather and floods; 14 INTEGRATING THE THEME WITH THE EXISTING CURRICULUM The initial design requires considerable work on the part of teachers. Again, sometimes students help design the curriculum. DESIGNING INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN DESIGNING INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN This usually involves making changes to the class schedule, combining hours normally devoted to specific topics, organizing field trips, teaching in teams, bringing in outside experts, and so on. ENCOURAGING PRESENTATION ENCOURAGING PRESENTATION Because thematic instruction is often project- oriented, it frequently involves students giving collective presentations to the rest of the school or the community. Plus, students commonly create extensive visual displays. BENEFITS Students could become bored with one theme Students might show low motivation or a lack of interest Finding appropriate and enough resources to prepare students appropriately can be an issue, especially if other teachers are teaching the same content. DISADVANTAGES Some standards may not work into the themes chosen causing missed content. Teacher planning and prep time may be increased due to gathering materials and creating materials to fill curriculum gaps. if students are absent, they might struggle with making those connections. DISADVANTAGES Thematic instruction can be a powerful tool for reintegrating the curriculum and eliminating the isolated, reductionist nature of teaching around disciplines rather than experience. It requires a lot of hard, initial design work, plus a substantial restructuring of teacher relationships and class schedules. TASK: 1. Identify a theme based on any folktale 2.
