LESSON 3: PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE SELF PART 1 LESSON OBJECTIVES Identify the different ideas in psychology about the SELF. Analyze how the self develops based on the difference perspectives in Psychology and theories in psychology. Demonstrate critical and reflective thought in analyzing the development of self from the psychological perspectives. Thoughts to Ponder… Who you really are? Who are you that makes you who you are? What part of your personality makes you who you are? SELF related to Psychological Perspectives “Self is the sense of personal identity and of who we are as individuals.” - Jhagiani and Tarry, 2014 What is Psychology PSYCHOLOGY is the scientific study of human behavior and mental process. Four goals of psychology: Describe – what the person is doing Explain – why is she/he doing that Predict – what is he going to do Modify – how can we change the behavior Psychology is concerned with… How individuals develop and mature at different life stages. Concepts such as consciousness, memory, and reasoning. How the individual and his environment shape his personality. How we think, behave, and feel in certain situations. Mental health and mental illnesses. Character strengths, coping, happiness, and well-being. I. Theory of Cognitive Development Deals with the nature of knowledge itself and how humans come to acquire it. JEAN PIAGET observed how children process and make sense of the world around them and eventually developed a four-stage model of how the mind processes the information encountered. Basic Concepts of Cognitive Dev. Theories SCHEMA – the building blocks of knowledge; mental organizations that individuals use to understand their environments. ADAPTATION – how a child’s learning process meets the situational demands STAGES OF Cognitive Dev’t – reflects the increasing sophistication of the child’s thought processes. Basic Concepts of Cognitive Dev. Theories ASSIMILATION: the application of previous concepts to new concepts ACCOMMODATION: when existing ideas are challenged; correct your thinking so that your thought process would adapt Stages of Cognitive Development OBJECT PERMANENCE The ability to realize that objects still exist when they are not being sensed. Stages of Cognitive Development Animistic Thinking Believing that inanimate objects are alive Egocentrism not being capable of seeing things from another person’s perspectives Conservation recognition that when some properties (such as shape) of an object change, other properties (such as volume ) remain constant Stages of Cognitive Development END OF LESSON 3
