GOOD MORNING CLASS THE DISCIPLINE OF LINGUISTICS Ms. Abbygail D. Pagarao  LINGUISTIC S It was derived from the Latin word lingua, which refers to language. Interdisciplinary in nature, intersecting the humanities with the social as it inquires on the basic element that allows societies to communicate ideas across time and space. SOUND It is divided into phonetics and phonology. COMPONENT Phonetics – studies human S OF speech sound. LINGUISTICS Phonology – studies the principles governing sound system of languages. STRUCTURE It is divided into morphology and syntax. COMPONENT Morphology – studies S OF language structure from its LINGUISTICS morphic units or root words. Syntax – studies sentence structure such as grammar. MEANING It is divided into semantics and pragmatics. COMPONENT Semantics – studies the S OF logic and meanings of LINGUISTICS words and phrases. Pragmatics – studies the use of language and its effects on society.  Philology – the study of the history of words.
