THE STAVE, CLEFS, LEGER LINES, AND NOTES/RESTS LESSON 1 - 3 LESSON 1 (THE STAVE AND CLEFS) I. THE STAVE (OR STAFF) -It is consists of parallel lines. Upon these lines and in the spaces between them, the notes are written. - Indicates which note should be played. - it allowed the composer to write exactly the notes he/she wished to write. A STAVE or BRACE -connection between two staves. The right-hand part is written on the upper stave, the left hand part on the lower stave. BRACE CLEFS -signs placed at the beginning of each stave. They show the names and pitch of the notes. - each clef indicates how the lines and spaces of the staff correspond to pitch.
