MELODY Melody is the result of notes and pitches played together with other musical symbols. These musical symbols help shape the melody of music. MELODY MUSICAL SYMBOLS AND THEIR MEANING Accidentals It is a musical symbol that turns a note into either a flat, a sharp, or a natural. SHARP It makes a pitch higher by ½ step. FLAT It makes a pitch of a note lower by ½ step. NATURAL It cancels sharp and flat symbols and makes the note return to its original pitch. USE OF MUSICAL SYMBOLS IN A MUSICAL COMPOSITION Musical symbols can be compared to different punctuation marks such as period, comma, question mark, and exclamation point, that are used by linguists to make sentences meaningful. Musicians also use various musical symbols to make their compositions sound beautiful and meaningful. ► An example of song that shows accidental (#) is “Pilipinas Kong Mahal.” This is one of the nationalistic songs that reminds us to be loyal to our country by being a law-abiding citizen. Let us sing the song by the heart.
