Orientation To Pharmacy Lecture 1 Dr. Roxane Abdel Gawad department Pharmaceutics & Industrial Pharmacy Faculty of Pharmacy Ain Shams University Pharmaceutical Terminology  Pharmacy: ‫الصيدله‬ The practice (profession) of preparing and dispensing medicines for their proper use in the treatment and prevention of diseases  Pharmacist: ً‫الصٌدل‬ The drug expert who dispenses drugs & gives advice to patients (patient counseling)  Patient counseling: ‫ارشاد المرضى‬ The act of providing drug information by the pharmacist to the patient regarding: directions of use, advice on side effects, precautions, storage and diet modifications  Pharmaceutics: ‫الصيدالنيات‬ The science of preparing and dispensing drugs (one of the unique branches of pharmacy)  Drug dispensing: ‫صرف الدواء‬ The preparation, packaging, labeling, and transfer of a drug to the patient  Drug (Medicament): ‫عقار‬ An active material intended for use in the diagnoses, treatment or prevention of diseases  Generic (Non-proprietary) name : ً‫االسم الكٌمٌائ‬ The chemical name of the drug (e.g. Paracetamol)  Trade (Proprietary) (Commercial) name: ‫االسم التجاري‬ The protected brand name of the drug e.g. (Panadol® - Abimol® - Paramol®) Dose: ‫الجرعه‬ The quantity (amount) of drug taken by the patient at a specific time to exert the desired therapeutic response e.g. (5 mL antibiotic) Dose regimen: ‫النظام العالجً او نظام الجرعات‬ The frequency (schedule) at which drug doses are administered to a patient e.g. (5 mL twice daily for 5 days) Dosage form (Drug delivery system): ً‫الشكل الصٌدل‬ The physical form in which a drug is dispensed to the patient for use E.g.  Capsule:  Small solid soluble case of gelatin  Contains a single dose of drug  Swallowed as a whole  Tablet:  Small solid disc of compressed soluble ingredients  Contains a single dose of drug  Swallowed as a whole  Suppository:  Solid medical preparation in a cylindrical shape  Designed to be inserted into the rectum or vagina  Contains a single dose of drug  Solution:  Liquid mixture in which the solute (drug) is uniformly distributed (soluble) in the solvent  Contains multiple doses of the drug  Route of administration: ‫طرٌق اعطاء الدواء‬ The pathway which a dosage form takes to enter the body  Examples: 1. Oral 2. Topical 3. Rectal 4. Parenteral 5. Ophthalmic (ocular) 6. Otic (aural) 7. Nasal 8. Vaginal Pharmaceutical terminology of drug classes  Analgesic: ‫مسكن‬ A drug that suppresses pain without inducing unconsciousness  Anesthetic: ‫مخدر‬ A drug that causes loss of sensation with/without loss of awareness (local or general). prevent pain during surgeries  Antacid: ‫مضاد للحموضه‬ A drug that neutralizes excess gastric acid  Antibacterial (Antibiotic): ‫مضاد حٌوي‬ A drug that treats bacterial infections  Antiemetic: ‫مضاد للقٌئ‬ A drug that prevents vomiting (emesis) Antifungal: ‫مضاد للفطرٌات‬ A drug that treats fungal infections Anti-inflammatory: ‫مضاد لاللتهابات‬ A drug that reduces inflammation & swelling (steroidal or NSAID) Antipruritic: ‫مضاد للحكه اوللهرش‬ A drug that reduces itching (pruritus) Antipyretic: ‫خافض للحراره‬ A drug that reduces fever (pyrexia) Antitussive: ‫مهدئ للسعال او للكحه‬ A drug that suppresses cough Digestant: ‫مهضم‬ A drug or enzyme that aids digestion of food  Diuretic: ‫مدر للبول‬ A drug that increases the urine output (diuresis)  Expectorant: ‫طارد للبلغم‬ A drug that facilitates expelling of viscous sputum through liquification Hypertensive: ‫رافع لضغط الدم‬ A drug that raises lowered blood pressure Hypotensive (Antihypertensive): ‫خافض لضغط الدم‬ A drug that lowers high blood pressure Hypoglycemic: ‫خافض لسكرالدم‬ a drug that reduces blood glucose level )treat diabetes(  Laxative: ‫ملٌن‬ A drug that assists in the evacuation of stool in patients suffering from constipation  Miotic: ‫قابض لحدقه العٌن‬ A drug that constricts the eye pupil  Mydriatic: ‫موسع لحدقه العٌن‬ A drug that dilates the eye pupil  Narcotic: ‫مخدر‬ an addictive drug that affects mood or behavior (some are strong analgesics) Thank you for your time!
