AIN SHAMS UNIVERSITY, FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE LEVEL 2 ANIMAL PRODUCTION Lec.5 MAMMARY GLANDS Dr. Sabry Hemida Hassanin. Prof.of Animal Physiology Ain Shams Univ. Fac. of Agriculture. Separate Mammary Glands-Quarters Theudder of a cow producing 40 lbs. of milk in a12-hour period can weigh up to 100 lbs. MedianSuspensory Ligament (MSL) -The most important support for the udder (MSL) -Clearly divides the udder into the right and left halves -The MSL is composed of elastic tissue that stretches to allow the udder to expand as it fills with milk Pendulous Udder If the Medial and Lateral suspensory ligaments weaken and the cordlike structure that attaches the fore udder to the body wall stretches, the result can be a pendulous udder. Disadvantages of a pendulous udder include: Cleaning difficulty Milking difficulty Risk of injury Risk of mastitis Udder Support in Cow Skin Fine connective tissue below skin Connective tissue attaches front quarters to abdominal wall Lateral suspensory ligaments (LSL) Median suspensory ligament (MSL) The subpelvic tendon Duct System Teat meatus, the small canal located in the end of each teat is.5 to 1 cm long and is the only sphincter in each gland Seven or eight loose folds of membrane known as furstenburg rosette are located above the teat meatus The teat cistern, the cavity within the teat hold 30 to 90 ml of milk.
