Course Introduction National University Community Medicine department Behavioural science Lec 1 Dr. Hiba Elzaki General Objectives: By the end of this course students are expected to: Demonstrate knowledge of the psychosocial aspects of human development. Recognize the significance of effective communication in the health provision process. Understand the genetic, developmental, and environmental factors that control human behaviour. Clarify the values and attitudes that distinguish the medical profession from others. :Specific objectives 1. Recognize the factors that affect the health service provider – patient relationship. 2. Recognize and give examples for non professional behavior. 3. Recognize the skills necessary for effective communication and discuss ways to improve them. 4. Identify the different personality styles and their impact on the doctor –patient relationship. 5. Define the terms-family and community and discuss the different types of family structure and the family role in dealing with health issues. 6. Discuss the effects of socioeconomic status on health. 7. Define culture and discuss the cultural influences on health behavior. 8. Recognize the effect of multi cultural diversity on doctor- patient relationship. 9. Define behavioral medicine and identify the role of stress in disease. 10. Recognize and discuss the psychosocial aspect of illness and Socialism & Medicine Health can not be isolated form its social context. Man and social sciences are concerned in their own special way with human behavior. Social sciences: Definition The scientific study of human society and social relationships. Scientific disciplines of social sciences are economics, political sciences, sociology, social psychology and social anthropology. Behavioral sciences: Definition The science that deals with human action and seeks to generalize about human behaviour in society. Behavioral sciences can be divided into two academic fields: Neural (information sciences). Social (relational sciences).
