Caraga state university Ampayon, Butuan City 8600, Philippines URL: www.carsu.edu.ph KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN BY EMILIO JACINTO EMILIO JACINTO  was nineteen year old law student at the University of Santo Tomas when he joined the Katipunan  his schooling was cut short when he committed himself fully to the ideals and work of the movement  the national consciousness was fully awakened by the public execution of Filipino priest, Gomez, Burgos and Zamora (Gomburza) of the Cavity Mutiny of 1872  their death caused intense hatred of the Spanish friars and the emergence of Filipino activists  Andres Bonifacio who first formulated the code of conduct  Emilio Jacinto was the adviser of Andres and later earned for him the Brains of the Katipunan  But the Katipunan was not just a cry for freedom. It was a national aspiration made flesh.  It caught the passion of ordinary people, willing to stake their lives, believing that worse fate awaited their families if they did not stand up to face their oppressors.  The Kartilya presented its concept of virtuous living as lessons for self-reflection.  It asserted that it was the internal, not the external qualifications that make human greatness.  In the third statement, Jacinto defined true piety as a charity, love for one another, and actions, deeds, and speech guided by judicious reasons or true reason. OBJECTIVES or AIMS  The political objectives consisted of working for the separation of the Philippines from Spain.  The moral objective revolved around the teaching of good manners, hygiene, good morals, religious fanaticism, and weakness of character.  The civic aim revolved around the principle of self- help and the defense of the poor and the oppressed. THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN (TEACHINGS OF THE KATIPUNAN) 1. Shows the path on how to live a meaningful life for every Filipino 2. Tackles different aspects of a person’s life THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 1. A life that is not dedicated to a great and sacred cause is like a tree without a shade, or a poisonous weed. The first highlights the significance of living life with a purpose. “A Katipunero who does not have a purpose lives is a useless life.” Life is a gift given to everyone that must be treasured by making it meaningful through setting up goals and achieving it no matter how hard it is. THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 2. A good deed lacks virtue if it springs from a desire for personal profit and not from a sincere desire to do good. The second rule is about doing what is right. “A deed carried out for the sake of fame is not worthy of praise.” There are certain things in life that would make others proud because of you but sometimes it’s done just to be popular. Everyone must bear in mind that doing good must be accompanied by humbleness. A deed that is done must be because of what someone really feels like doing to help other people. THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 3. True charity resides in acts of compassion, in love for one’s fellow men, and in making true reason the measure of every move, deed, and word. The third shows what the true meaning of kindness is. “True act of kindness for a Katipunero is in the love and service he renders to other people and not the other way round.” It only means that having an open hand to give help without expecting in return is one of the best examples to show an act of kindness. THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 4. Be their skin dark or pale, all men are equal. One can be superior to another in knowledge, wealth, and beauty... but not in being. Every Katipuneros are treated equally no matter what race or educational background he has. Status and Identity will never be the reason for the unequal treatment of people. Whether they are Filipinos or not, rich or poor, men or women, and white or black, nobody deserves to be discriminated. THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 5. A person with a noble character values honor above self-interest, while a person with an ignoble character values self-interest above honor. The Fifth shows what honor should mean for a Katipunero. “A true Katipunero values Honor more than his personal interests.” THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 6. An honorable man’s word is his bond. The sixth is about doing the “walk the talk” concept or putting into action the words that has been promised. “A Katipunero who has a sense of shame must be a man of his own word.” THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 7. Don’t waste time; lost wealth may be recovered, but time lost is lost forever. The seventh rule gives importance to how we manage our time and give our best like tomorrow ends because time is as precious as a gold. “A Katipunero must give importance to time. For the Katipunan, a time lost will never be back.” THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 8. Defend the oppressed and fight the oppressor. The eighth lesson simply tells everyone to fight for what is right and fight with the persons who is at the right side. “A Katipunero must protect the weak and fight for those who oppress the weak.” THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 9. An intelligent man is he who takes care in everything he says and keeps quiet about what must be kept secret. The ninth is about the significance of trust that everyone must know how to keep confidential things in order to keep the trust that other people give. “A Katipunero is careful with what he says and keeps the things that must be kept secret.” THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 10. Along the thorny path of life, the man leads the way and his wife and children follow. If the leader goes the way of perdition, then so do those who are led. The tenth principle is all about being able to lead the family. “A Katipunero must lead his family to the right path. If the leader is consumed by evil, so does his followers.” THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 11. Do not regard a woman as a mere plaything, but as a helpmate and partner in the hardships of this existence. Have due regard to her weakness, and remember the mother who brought you into this world and nurtured you in your infancy. The eleventh highlights everything a man must look at woman’s identity. “A Katipunero must give importance to woman. He must not see her as an object, nor part time. That whenever a Katipunero sees a woman, he will remember his mother who nurtured him.” THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 12. What you would not want done to your wife, daughter and sister, do not do to the wife, daughter and sister of another. The twelfth principle gives importance to every action that one has to make. “A Katipunero must not do the things that he does not want to be done by him.” THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 13. A man’s worth does not come from him being a king, or in the height of his nose and the whiteness of his face, or in him being a priest, a representative of God, or in his exalted position on the face of this earth. Pure and truly noble is he who, though born in the forest and able to speak only his own tongue, behaves decently, is true to his word, has dignity and honor, who is not an oppressor and does not abet oppressors, who knows how to cherish and look after the land of his birth. THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN The thirteenth rule is about one’s knowledge on how to have a right character in dealing with life. “A Katipuneros’ life is not measured by what is his status in life nor with the things he possess. Instead, it is in his character and his love for the native land. THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN 14. When these doctrines have spread and the brilliant sun of beloved liberty shines on these poor Islands, and sheds its sweet light upon a united race, a people in everlasting happiness, then the lives lost, the struggle and the suffering will have been more than recompensed. THE 14 KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN The Last shows the idea of the author’s desire. It emphasizes the hope he has for everyone and believes that every sacrifices that a Katipunero make will always be worth it. Katipunan was not just an organization working towards the freedom of the Filipinos. They built on the ideological and political foundation constructed by men and women who sacrificed themselves because of their love for the country and for the people.  Katipunan was not just an organization working towards the freedom of the Filipinos. They built on the ideological and political foundation constructed by men and women who sacrificed themselves because of their love for the country and for the people.  Through Kartilya, Filipinos were united to fight for what they own.
