Population Growth Guided Notes 11/20/24 World Population Today- 8 billion (and growing) 3 facts from the 7 billion video- In 2045 9 million people In 2010 the average person lived to 67 years old. 2008 most people lived in cities than rual areas Define population- A species in one area What defines a population? Size, density, space, age structure What is expected to change in the US Population in the future? That younger generation will decrease while the older generation will increase What are the 3 stages of population growth? Growth, stability, decline Describe graph A-Exponential growth (J curve) Growth of pop. decearses with increasing numbers. Describe Graph B-Logistic growth (S curve) & Carrying capacity A pattern of growth in which a pop. grows faster than it increases in size. What has caused an imbalance of births vs deaths in society? Why is our population increasing rapidly? What is a limiting factor? Is a factor that controls the growth of a population; food, water, clean air etc. What is a density independent factor? Does not depend in the amount of organisms present (flood, volcano, drought) What is a density dependent factor? Depends in the number of organisms present (disease, parasites, lack of food, competition, stress from overwhelming) What factors affect population size? Birth rate, death rares, fertility rate, immigration, and emigration. Explain how Japan’s population has changed over time and why. Population Pyramids- Skill #16 into your notebook. Then select 3 countries with very different population structures. Paste them below and explain the possible reasons behind their shapes. https://www.populationpyramid.net/nigeria/2024/ What article number were you given? What is the article title? Summarize 3 talking points and be ready to discuss in class. #3 Economists broadly agree that population growth fuels economic growth in wealthy countries. Projections suggest that, unless current trends change, those numbers could continue to diminish dramatically over the next two to three decades, with the population growing by just 78 million by 2060. Immigration is the easiest way to increase population growth Scenario: Imagine you are a leader of a country. How would you control the impact of a growing population on your country’s resources? Create a policy or law that you will enforce that will set limits on population growth and/or sustainable living requirements. As anyone might think at first— I think communism is the perfect example of this kind of problem, but often communism gets out of control, and cupidity spirals in the leaders. But, if communism was perfect and it was used exactly as it was planned then I’d that this would be a great solution to pop. growth.
