GOOD DAY, EVERYONE ! Lesson Objectives Define Intercultural Communication. Explain the characteristics of competent Intercultural Communicators Do a role play about the different stages of developmental model of intercultural communication. Definition and Nature of Intercultural Communication INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION Intercultural communication happens when individuals interact, negotiate, and create meanings while bringing in their varied cultural backgrounds. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION Intercultural communication takes place when people draw from their cultural identity to understand values, prejudices, language, attitudes, and relationships INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION Intercultural communication can flow smoothly and become very interesting for a cross-cultural group. However, things may not go as planned when communication is disrupted by cultural collisions. The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity 01 02 03 Minimizatio Denial Defense n 04 05 06 Acceptance Adaptation Integration 01 DENIAL The individual does not recognize cultural differences. Reject the claims that cultural differences exist. EXAMPLE People are not interested in cultural differences and could care less about people other then the ones that are in their direct culture. "With my experience, I can be successful in any culture without any special effort." 02 DEFENSE The individual starts to recognize cultural differences and is intimidated by them, resulting in either a superior view on own culture or an unjustified high regard for the new one. EXAMPLE A person in this defense may feel threatened by other cultures and their differences. "I wish these people would just talk the way we do." 03 MINIMIZATION Although individuals see cultural differences, they bank more on the universality of ideas rather than on cultural differences. EXAMPLE The learner begins to find commonalities between themselves and people of other cultures. “Once we see through the cultural differences, we really are just the same.” 04 ACCEPTANCE The individual begins to appreciate important cultural differences in behaviors and eventually in values. EXAMPLE The more difference the better- more difference results in more creative ideas. "I always try to study about a new culture before I go there or interact with the people." 05 ADAPTATION The individual is very open to world views when accepting new perspectives. EXAMPLE Learners are able in incorporate the world view of others into their own world view. "To really help this student, I'm going to have to change my approach." 06 INTEGRATION Individuals start to go beyond their own cultures and see themselves and their actions based on multifarious cultural viewpoints. EXAMPLE They are able to help others understand different cultures and promote unity between these two cultures "Everywhere is home, if you know enough about how things work there." Characteristics of Competent Intercultural Communicators Flexibility and the ability to tolerate 01 high levels of uncertainty 02 Reflectiveness or mindfulness 03 Open-mindedness 04 Sensitivity 05 Adaptability Ability to engage in divergent thinking 06 and systems-level thinking 07 Politeness NOTE! Gender, age, social status, and religion must also be taken into consideration when communicating with others. TIPS FROM AVOIDING BEING BIAS IN COMMUNICATING Avoid stereotypes, i.e., 01 generalizations about a certain group. Challenge gender norms; avoid using “he” 02 and “man” to refer to a sentence to avoid using pronouns. The use of his/her is also acceptable. 03 Do not talk down to younger people and the elderly. Be sensitive to the religious practices of 04 others. Be polite at all times; do not belittle people 05 you perceive to be in a lower social class than you. THANK YOU! 
