Intercultural Communication Oral Communication in Context Subject Routines Assigned Students Objectives Identify the relevance of intercultural communication, especially in communicating to those with different cultural and social practices; Analyze different situations that present discrimination and racism and come up with possible responses in adherence to being a Lourdesian student; and Apply the concept of intercultural communication in investigating Filipino practices that might indirectly teach discrimination and disrespect towards others Reflect and Question! Why is racism normalized? Role Play! Demonstrate the situations! Situation #1 Person A is speaking using the English language. Meanwhile, Person B is using Filipino. Person A says that Person’s B language is not on par with theirs. Person B then proceeds to speak in English fluently, leaving Person A speechless. Situation #2 You are with your boss and other co-workers. The boss tells you and the others that Filipinos are not business-minded unlike them, the Chinese. However, he says them in a jokingly manner, leaving the rest of you laughing awkwardly. Situation #3 You and your friend are discussing about your careers. You are a public school teacher, while they are part of the legislative branch. They then tell you that they earn twice than you, and that being a public school teacher is nothing more but a wasteful job. You tried to argue, but they overwhelm you with laughter and other statements. Processing How does this present communication in today’s society? Define! What is your definition of culture? Ethnocentrism People evaluate each other’s culture ○ Positive (You prefer your culture over others) ○ Negative (Belief that your culture is superior; other’s behavior must be evaluated Ethnocentrism People evaluate each other’s culture ○ Extremely negative (imposition of your cultural beliefs towards other people) Stereotyping Inaccurate description of a particular group of people Can either be positive or negative Usually perpetuated by media, organizations, or other institutions Prejudice Negative feeling towards a particular group of people Can include the deprivation of one’s rights Might resort to violence and extermination Discrimination Negative behaviors as a result of prejudice or stereotyping Includes verbal assaults, avoidance, physical violence, and other violent forms Let’s Reflect! High Context Communication Participants have established connections No need for specific or explicit messages Seen as collective or they form interpersonal relationships Low Context Communication Participants only engage when it is necessary Heavily requires specific/explicit messages Seen as individualist or more on the intrapersonal side Let’s Reflect!
