## Environmental geography It is the study of how people use the environment and how the use of the environment affects its quality. It shows the relationship between people and the environment they live in. This type of Geography is concerned with how the environment is damaged through agriculture, pollution, deforestation etc. It also promotes protection and management of the environment to preserve their qualities. ### Agriculture - It is the rearing of livestock and growing of crops. ### Farming types - **Commercial farming:** the practice of growing crops and rearing livestock for profit. - **Subsistence farming:** the practice of growing crops and raising livestock for family consumption, without any surplus for trade. - **Arable farming:** farming which specialises in producing crops only. - **Pastoral farming:** farming which specialises in the production/rearing of livestock/animal products. Keeping of animals (on farms). - **Mixed farming:** farming which produces crops and rear/keep livestock. ### Benefits of farming - It provides raw materials e.g., cotton, animal skin etc. - It is a source of food. - It provides animal feed. - It is a source of employment. - It can contribute to the economy of a country e.g., the beef industry in Botswana. ### FACTORS INFLUENCING FARMING - Availability of flat land - Availability of fertile soils - Presence of rainfall - Suitable temperatures - Availability of vegetation for pastures
