Mansa Musa - Mali doubled in size under the rule of Mansa Musa - Mansa Musa ruled from 1312 to 1337 - Mansa Musa encouraged Muslim scholars and artists to visit Niana - Mansa Musa used the empire’s wealth to support Muslim artists and scholars building mosques and learning centers (mosque of Sankore in Timbuktu) - Mali was weakened after the death of Mansa Musa in 1337 Askia Muhammad - Promoted Islam and trade and made Timbuktu center of Islamic learning - Ordered local courts to follow Muslim laws - Songhai reached the height of its power under Askia Muhammad Sundiata Keita - Emerged in the 13th century, with Sundiata Keita leading after defeating the Sossos. - United by Sundiata Keita (1230-1255 CE), controlling gold mines in West Sudan. - Seized Ghana and expanded the empire under Sundiata Keita - Griots credit Sundiata Keita for Mali’s rise - Sundiata united Mali’s people during his rule from 1230 to 1255 - Sundiata’s conquests put Mali in control of gold mines in West Sudan Sunni Ali - In 1464, Sunni Ali became the ruler of Songhai and seized control of Timbuktu - Sunni Ali used location along the Niger River to extend territory including salt mines - Sunni Ali and Askia Muhammad promoted Islam and education in Timbuktu. - Sunni Ali gained merchant loyalty through Islam; Askia Muhammad established Islamic courts.
