Mediums & Techniques of art GROUP 5 PRESENTATION Objectives I DEFINE WHAT IS MEDIUM AND TECHNIQUE IN ART II KNOW THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF MEDIUM III KNOW THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF TECHINQUES IV IMPORTANCE OF MEDIUMS AND TECHNIQUES MEDIUM MEDIUM REFERS TO THE MATERIALS USED BY ARTISTS TO CREATE A WORK OF ART. IT IS THE MEANS BY WHICH THEY COMMUNICATE THEIR IDEAS AND VISION. ARTISTS CHOOSE A PARTICULAR MEDIUM BASED ON HOW WELL IT REFLECTS THE CONCEPT THEY WANT TO CONVEY Marshall Mcluhan The Although not a visual artist himself, he stated medium that "The medium is the message," as it is the emphasizes how the medium through which content is conveyed message. shapes experience the audience's and understanding of that content. II What are the different kinds of Medium? OIL PAINTING Oil painting is one of the oldest painting mediums in the world. dry slowly, the finished artwork has a deep, rich color with a distinctive smell that comes from linseed, poppy seed, walnut, or safflower oils that were utilized within the paint. WATERCOLOR PAINTING Used by landscape painters to create soft changes between colors in their artworks. This paint medium has a transparent appearance and takes a long time to dry. ACRYLIC PAINTING A fairly new medium compared to other painting mediums like oil painting. Suitable for artists who work fast since the paint dries fast. one of the most popular mediums of painting, especially for beginners, due to its low price and ease of use. PASTELS used for drawing and painting. made from dry, powdered pigment that is held together with a binder. There are also two types of pastels: oil pastels and soft pastels. Oil pastels are made from an oil binder, while soft pastels come from gum arabic and chalk. TEMPERA Used for centuries because of its fast-drying ingredients and long-lasting pigments. with pigments bound in a water-soluble emulsion, such as water and egg yolk, or an oil-in- water emulsion, such as oil and a whole egg. ENCAUSTIC Made from beeswax and color pigments. The wax is melted, mixed with the pigment, and later cooled and re-melted to produce a compact block of paint. A heat gun or other heating element is necessary if you are doing encaustic painting. The wax can be molded or sculpted once it is applied to the surface.. FRESCO Fresco painting is one of the three main painting mediums used during the Renaissance period, together with Tempera and Oil Painting. Fresco was used to adorn the ceilings and walls of churches and other public buildings. INK PAINTING Known for their simplicity and minimalism. The emphasis is on the beauty of the line and the smooth flow of the ink while painting. This is popularly used in Japan, where an ink painting that uses mostly black ink is called sumi-e. GOUACHE PAINTING It is related to watercolor painting. It uses the same gum Arabic binder but has more pigment, which is not ground as finely as watercolor. Difference DIGITAL PAINTING this is a modern painting medium that uses digital devices like iPads, computers, and graphic tablets to create paintings. It is commonly used today due to its convenient features, like modifying brushes to imitate the texture and appearance of conventional painting mediums. TECHNIQUE TECHNIQUE, ON THE OTHER HAND, REFERS TO THE METHOD OR PROCESS AN ARTIST USES TO MANIPULATE THE MEDIUM IN CREATING AN ARTWORK. IT IS HOW THE ARTIST SELECTS AND ARRANGES THE MATERIALS TO ACHIEVE A PARTICULAR EFFECT OR EXPRESS THEIR STYLE. ;) Techniques in art Painting Techniques is a specific method or approach used by artists to apply paint to a surface, influencing the texture, appearance, and effect of the artwork. It includes: BRUSHWORK COLOR TECHNIQUE APPLICATION METHODS SPECIAL EFFECTS BRUSHWORK GLAZING Applying transparent layers of paint to create depth and luminosity. IMPASTO SCUMBLING Thick, textured Rubbing a layer of application of paint paint over a dry layer that stands out from to create texture and the surface. highlights. C O L O R T E C H N I Q U E S Color Blocking Using large areas of solid color to create strong visual contrasts. Color Mixing Combining colors to create new hues and shades. A P P L I C A T I O N M E T H O D S Wet-on-Wet Applying paint onto a wet surface to allow colors to blend Dry Brush Using a dry brush with minimal paint for a scratchy, textured effect. S P E C I A L E F F E C T S Splattering Flicking or splashing paint onto the canvas for dynamic effects. Dripping Allowing paint to drip down the canvas, often used in abstract expressionism. Drawing Techniques is a specific method used to create marks or lines on a surface to represent forms, textures, and details in a drawing. It includes: LINE TECHNIQUES SHADING TECHNIQUES TEXTURAL TECHNIQUE L I N E T E C H N I Q U E S CROSS-HATCHING Creating shading and texture by intersecting lines HATCHING STIPPLING Using parallel lines to Using dots to create texture and shading. build up shading. S H A D I N G T E C H N I Q U E S Blending Smoothly transitioning between light and dark areas using tools like blending stumps or fingers. Smudging Using tools or fingers to blur lines and create softer transitions. T E XT U R A L T E C H N I Q U E S SCRATCHING involves creating images or textures by scratching away a top layer of material, such as paint or ink, to reveal a contrasting layer beneath ERASING Using an eraser to lift out highlights or correct mistakes Sculpture Techniques are methods used to shape and manipulate materials to create three-dimensional forms. CARVING MODELING CARVING Subtractive Carving Removing material from a solid block to create a sculpture (e.g., stone, wood). Relief carving Carving designs into a flat surface where the image is raised above the background. MODELING Additive modeling Building up material (e.g., clay) to create a form. Casting Pouring liquid material (e.g., bronze, resin) into a mold to create a solid form. Printmaking Techniques Are methods used to create artworks by transferring ink from a matrix (such as a plate, block, or screen) to a surface (usually paper) RELIEF PRINTING INTAGLIO PRINTING RELIEF PRINTING Woodcut Carving into a block of wood, inking the surface, and pressing it onto paper. Linocut Similar to woodcut but using linoleum as the carving surface. INTAGLIO PRINTING Etching Used to create detailed images on a metal plate, which is then inked and printed onto paper. Engraving Carving directly into a metal plate to create images Digital Art Techniques involve using electronic tools and software to create or manipulate visual art. DIGITAL PAINTING 3D MODELING PHOTO MANIPULATION D I G I T A L P A I N T I N G Layering Using multiple layers to build up complex images and effects. Blending modes Adjusting how colors and textures interact through different layer modes. 3 D M O D E L I N G Mesh modeling Creating objects by manipulating a network of vertices and edges. Digital Sculpting Shaping digital clay to create detailed 3D models. P H O T O M A N I P U L A T I O N Layer Masks Hiding or revealing parts of layers to create composite images. Adjusting Layers Applying non-destructive changes to color and tone Mixed media Techniques Involves combining various materials and methods in a single artwor COLLAGE TEXTURAL EFFECTS Collage Combining various materials (e.g., paper, fabric) to create a single artwork. Textural effects Incorporating different materials (e.g., sand, fabric) into a painting or drawing to add physical texture. IMPORTANCE The importance of mediums and techniques in creating art can be seen in their ability to influence the overall aesthetic and message of the work. In essence, the medium and techniques employed by artists serve to convey meaning and messages in their artwork. The message may range from an emotional, personal narrative to a political or social statement. They impact the final outcome of the artwork and help to create an emotional connection between the viewer and the artwork.
