WHAT IS MEDIUM AND TECHNIQUE? One of the features of a r t is its capacity to satisfy the senses. For a work of art to be perceived and appreciated, it must have physical manifestations in the forms of medium used and technique applied. the substance/material that is manipulated describes the skillful manipulation of the medium SOME OF THE LOCAL MATERIALS/MEDIA USED AND TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO PHILIPPINE ARTS Art Some Materials and Techniques Painting Artist may use common paint (acrylic, oil, watercolor, tempera, enamel, latex, etc.) but other materials can be used as pigments such as coffee grounds, where coffee is abundant. Some artists may use squid ink if they live near the sea. Tools can be in various forms too like brushes made of synthetic materials, animal feathers, bamboos, or twigs from the environment. Instead of stretching the canvas into frames, one can prepare them as a tapestry then sews the edges of the canvas. Sculpture Basic methods of creating a sculpture: Modelling or addition in the use of clay Subtraction in carving of hard materials like stone or wood Construction by assembling parts y adhesion or welding Weaving Forms of weaving: Palaspas Basketry Banig Paper Craft Forms of Paper Craft: Handmade paper can be produced from cogon grass and natural fibers, salago bark, abaca bark, and fibers from banana and pineapple. Papier mache refers to the substance made of pulp of sheets of paper glued and pressed together and molded while moist to form into a 3D object. Paper cutting art (pastillas pabalat art) originated in San Miguel, Bulacan where carabao milk candies are made. Architecture Load-bearing construction relies on the sheer weight of the building to support itself by using thick walls, as in the Ivatan houses. Post-and-lintel construction consists of horizontal member, called lintel or beam, supported at both ends by vertical members, called posts or columns (ex. bahay na bato at kahoy and bahay kubo). Arches, vaulting, and domes are masonry constructions made of segments or blocks of stone or brick, arranged in a curved pattern, allowing a building to have larger spans. Thin shell is a 3D curved plate structure of reinforced concrete whose thickness is small compared to 3D load-carrying behavior which is determined by the geometry of its form, by the way it is supported, and by the nature of the applied load (ex. Church of the Holy Sacrifice at UP Diliman) Folded plate is a roof structure in which strength and stiffness is derived from a pleated r folded geometry. A cantilever is horizontal member projecting beyond its support; overhang and prevent obstruction of movement beneath them, which is why they are often used in entrances and waiting areas. Multimedia art A combination of visual and non-visual elements such as sound, motion, literature, drama, dance graphics, music, performance, and situation. It can be computer-controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images, animation, audio, and any other media. Installation art Everyday and natural materials are often chosen for their over-all immersive qualities, incorporating them with new media such as image projection, video, sound, performance, and digital media. Music The techniques in music composition and performance depend on the genres: Classical Semi-classical Instrumental Folk and indigenous Contemporary and new music Dance Like music, techniques in dance performance are determined by the genres: Ballet Social dance Folk and indigenous Modern dance and theater Theater Regardless of the genre and performance technique, it must consist the elements: audience, performers, text or script, director, theater space, and design elements. Cinema These elements compose every scene in a movie and together constitute the essence of the film: narrative, cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing, sound. Some techniques in filmmaking are narrative, documentary, and experimental. Source: Lico et.al.(2018). Sining Rehiyon.Contemporary Arts from the Philippine Regions for Senior High School. Quezon City: C&E SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL o A work of art involves the skillful use of media and techniques to express ideas or experiences. o The medium/material is a substance being manipulated. o Technique is the combining and skillful manipulation of the media. o One can be resourceful and creative as to the materials and techniques applied in his/her art. o Since change is permanent, media and techniques also evolve and as time passes by, more are discovered.
