GROUP 1 OBJECTIVES At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to. to ensure the sustainability of 01 natural resources for future generations. to protect wildlife and habitats 02 while ensuring food security. to strengthen environmental 03 resilience and improve quality of life. Introduction THE TERM "BIODIVERSITY" WAS FIRST COINED BY WALTER G. ROSEN IN 1986. defined as the vast variety of life forms in the entire Earth encompasses all kinds of life forms, from the single-celled organisms to the largest multi-celled organisms it is essential for maintaining ecological balance, providing resources, and supporting human survival ( Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005). It is the source of the essential goods and ecological services that constitute the source of life for all and it has direct consumptive value in food, agriculture, medicine, and in industry." (Villaggio Globale, 2009) TYPES OF BIODIVESITY SPECIE DIVERSITY Species diversity is a group of organisms that may interbreed and produce offspring that is also capable of reproducing the same kind. ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY Ecosystem diversity deals with the different ecosystem in a certain overall effects on humans and the environment. GENETIC DIVERSITY Genetic diversity refers to the diversity within a species the greater the genetic diversity, the higher is the chance of a long term survival. IMPORTANT OF BIODIVESITY FOR SOCIETY ECOSYSTEM SERVICES Ecosystem services are defined as the direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems to human well-being, and have an impact on our survival and quality of life. There are four types of ecosystem services: provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting services. IMPORTANT OF BIODIVESITY FOR SOCIETY HEALTH BENEFITS Biodiversity is the variety of life on Food Nutrition Earth, including the diversity of Freshwater species, ecosystems, and genes. Disease protection Biodiversity is important to human cultural benefits health in many ways, including: clean air IMPACT OF BIODIVESITY ON HUMAN HEALTH 1. DISEASE CONTROL Biodiversity loss and ecosystem change can increase the risk of emergence or spread of infectious diseases in animals, plants and humans, including economically important livestock diseases, zoonotic outbreaks and global pandemics. 2. THREATS OF BIODIVERSITY BIODIVERSITY AND HUMAN HEALTH 5 reasons why biodiversity matters - to human health, the economy and your wellbeing 1. Biodiversity Supports Human Health – Biodiversity is essential for human health and well-being, economic prosperity, food safety and security, and other important areas necessary for the individual and collective wellness of all human societies. Healthy ecosystems provide clean air, support food security, grant humans and wildlife access to freshwater, and support all of our livelihoods. 2. Biodiversity Boosts the Economy Biodiversity is important for the economy and physical well-being because it provides many benefits, including: Food and nutrition security Medicine Clean air and water 3. Biodiversity Enhances Mental and Physical Well-being Biodiversity provides us with essential ecosystem services that are crucial for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. These can include access to clean air and water, nutrient cycling, food production, medicinal resources, climate regulation, and disease control, among others 4. Biodiversity Ensures Ecosystem Services Ecosystem services by providing the variety of life on Earth that is necessary to sustain the structure, processes, and key functions of ecosystems. 5. Biodiversity Provides Resilience to Global Challenges Biologically diverse communities are also more likely to contain species that confer resilience to that ecosystem because as a community accumulates species, there is a higher chance of any one of them having traits that enable them to adapt to a changing environment. WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP? EDUCATION Volunteering, teaching life skills, donating resources, supporting educational charities, advocating for education policies, creating educational content, mentoring scholarships, fostering community engagement, and forming partnerships with schools, nonprofits, local businesses, and international organizations can improve students' academic performance, support teachers, and foster collaboration to improve educational outcomes and infrastructure. WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP? AWARENESS To create positive change, raise awareness about important issues through various methods such as social media, event organizing, traditional media, education, community outreach, fundraising, petitions, volunteering, art and culture, and policy advocacy. Share information on platforms like Instagram, organize events, use traditional media, educate through schools and universities, create community outreach, fund awareness campaigns, create petitions, volunteer for organizations, use art and culture to visually represent the cause, and engage in policy and advocacy by lobbying for change. Why biodiversity is important to science and technology? It enhances scientific knowledge and drives solutions to global challenges. It drives innovation and supports sustainable technological development.
