Iconoclasm: The destruction or attack or breaking of a religious icon Schism: The separation (but not a full break) into two churches over the dispute of beliefs 1. What are the three differences between Christianity in the West and East? -​ Western Christianity was facing change and instability vs. the Byzantine Empire continued with Constantinople as its capital -​ The West was developing its own form of Christianity, while the East lived in isolation and continued to flourish -​ Islam emerged in the 7th century which was reflected in trade in the West, and began to encroach on the East, with its armies and reducing the Byzantine empire. 2. What were the Eastern and Western views on icons? Where and when was this controversy settled? What decision was made regarding icons? The Eastern church began to give greater devotion to icons meanwhile the West thought they were taking it “too far” in worshipping icons. This controversy at the second council of Nicea in 787 CE. The council accepted icons because God had become visible in the person Jesus. 3. What was the controversy surrounding the Creed? The Western Church (bishops) under the pope added the phrase that the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father “and the Son”. The East felt the pope exceeded his authority and the phrase was not theological sound.
