JESUS PREPARATION This topic is going to introduce to you the preparation for Jesus ministry (work) consists of three main events. 1. Boy Jesus (TB p.16) 1. At 12 years old, 1. His parents took Jesus to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover Festival. 2. On their way to home in Nazareth, they discovered that Jesus was missing. 3. Finally, they found him listening to the Jewish teachers and asking questions with wisdom and understanding in the Temple. All who heard Jesus were amazed at his responses. 4. “Why did you have to look for me? Didn’t you know that I had to be in my father’s house?” Jesus responded to his parents. 5. God blessed him to grow both in wisdom and in stature, gaining favour with God and man. At 30 years old, Jesus left his hometown, Nazareth. 1.He arrived at River Jordan and asked John the Baptist to baptise him before he started his ministry. 2. This is all that the Bible tells us about Jesus' early life. The Bible is not interested in Jesus' biography. “God's King had arrived” is the focus of the Gospel writers. 2.The Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. (TB P.17) 1. Jesus was baptized by John in the River of Jordan. 2. And as he was praying, heaven was opened, and the HOLY SPIRIT descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice of the FATHER came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 2:21-22) P. 11 3.What is Baptism? (TB p.16-17) 1. It represented God’s washing people sins off and forgiveness of our sins. In early days, people were baptised when they joined the church. Nowadays, each church has its own tradition in carrying out the ceremony. There are two types of baptism. Aspersion, the reverend sprinkles water on the baby/believer’s forehead. Dip-in, the whole body of the believer is immersed into the water. 4.John the Baptist, Jesus' cousin. 1. He preached in the wilderness and baptized people before Jesus started to preach. 2. He was Jesus vanguard (foremost part of an advancing army) who i. acted as a messenger who goes before a king and tells people, 'The King is coming.' ii. prepared the people for Christ to save and rule. iii. warned the people to repent, since they had been in rebellion against that Kingdom, i.e. the rule of that King. 5. Why did Jesus accept Baptism from John? 1.Jesus was the chosen king by the Father 2.Jesus was anointed by the Spirit 3.Jesus was confirmed by the prophet. 6.The Temptation of Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11; TB p.18) 1. After Jesus’ baptism, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert where he spent forty days and nights fasting before he was tempted THREE times by the Devil. 2. What is Temptation? Temptation is the intentional enticement of a person, by some bait— usually pride, always self-gratifying—to disobey God’s revealed Word. 3. What is Devil? (TB p.18) P. 12 Devil ,also known as "Satan", means a person who complains, slanders, or who is hostile to others. Devil is evil and always hinders the work of God. In Genesis 3, the snake tempted the ancestors of human to sin. The snake played the role of Satan and opposed God. 4. T1 - Turning stones into bread. 1. Temptation OT/NT - The need for food is legitimate after fasting. 2. Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ 5. T2 - Jumping off the temple. Devil plotted him with scriptures. 1. Temptation OT/NT – The protection from God is promised. 2. Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ 6. T3 - Worshipping the Devil 1. Temptation– The Lord of the world for wealth and fame 2. Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’ P. 13 5.Why Jesus has to go through temptations? 1.Jesus came to defeat the evil one and evil powers. 2.Jesus came to make it possible for us to share in the New Creation. 3.Where Adam/Israel failed, Jesus did not, he was the obedient and faithful son. NEW ADAM, NEW ISRAEL. MATTHEW 4:1-11 (THE MESSAGE) The Test 4 Next Jesus was taken into the wild by the Spirit for the Test. The Devil was ready to give it. 1-3 Jesus prepared for the Test by fasting forty days and forty nights. That left him, of course, in a state of extreme hunger, which the Devil took advantage of in the first test: “Since you are God’s Son, speak the word that will turn these stones into loaves of bread.” 4 Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: “It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.” 5-6 For the second test the Devil took him to the Holy City. He sat him on top of the Temple and said, “Since you are God’s Son, jump.” The Devil goaded him by quoting Psalm 91: “He has placed you in the care of angels. They will catch you so that you won’t so much as stub your toe on a stone.” 7 Jesus countered with another citation from Deuteronomy: “Don’t you dare test the Lord your God.” 8-9 For the third test, the Devil took him to the peak of a huge mountain. He gestured expansively, pointing out all the earth’s kingdoms, how glorious they all were. Then he said, P. 14 “They’re yours—lock, stock, and barrel. Just go down on your knees and worship me, and they’re yours.” 10 Jesus’ refusal was curt: “Beat it, Satan!” He backed his rebuke with a third quotation from Deuteronomy: “Worship the Lord your God, and only him. Serve him with absolute single- heartedness.” 11 The Test was over. The Devil left. And in his place, angels! Angels came and took care of Jesus’ needs. P. 15
