Reference Card #3 Kinds of Sentences According to Use or Function There are four kinds of sentences according to use or function. We use them to express our ideas and feelings in varied ways. 1. A declarative sentence states something or makes a statement. It ends with a period. Example: My cousins are inviting us to their town fiesta. 2. An interrogative sentence asks a question. The question can ask for information or it can be answerable by Yes or No. It ends with a question mark (?). Example: Would you like to go with us? 3. An imperative sentence gives instructions, an order or a command or a request. When it makes a request, the word may, please, or kindly may be used. It ends with a period (.) or a question mark (?). Example: Please join us, tell your mother about the trip. 4. An exclamatory sentence expresses a strong feeling. It ends with an exclamation point (!).
