Objectives: ✔ Classify the different kinds of nouns. ✔ Write own sentences correctly. Reference Card Nouns A noun is a word for a person, place, or thing. Everything we can see or talk about is represented by a word which names it. That "naming word" is called a noun. Kinds of Nouns A common noun is the word used for a class of person, place or thing. Examples: car town metal man water ammonia Note: Common nouns are capitalized only when they start a sentence. A proper noun is the name of a person, place or thing (i.e., its own name). A proper noun always starts with a capital letter. Examples: Michael United Nations Africa The Tower of London Peking Language Arts 4: Kinds of Nouns MGIP : School Year 2022-2023 Collective noun is the name we give to a group of nouns to refer to them as one entity. Examples: herd (of cattle) pack (of wolves) flock (of birds) swarm (of bees) bed (of oysters) pride (of lions) school (of fish) brood (of chicks) litter (of kittens) crowd (of people) colony (of ants) troupe (of dancers) gaggle (of geese) troop (of monkeys) Concrete nouns are words for things that can be experienced by one or more of the five physical senses; they can be seen, heard, smelled, tasted or touched. Examples: apple goat baby house door ice egg book fence Abstract nouns are things that can't be experienced by any of the physical senses; they can't be seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or touched; they are things that can only be known, understood, learned, believed, or felt emotionally. Examples: doctor, visitor, cousin, relative, nurse, friend, manager, singer Neuter – refers to names of things/objects.
