- Everything we can see or talk about is represented by a noun.
Kinds of Nouns

Common Nouns: These are general words for a class of person, place, or thing.
- Examples: car, town, metal, man, water, ammonia
- Common nouns are only capitalized when they start a sentence.

Proper Nouns: These are the specific names of people, places, or things.
- Examples: Michael, United Nations, Africa, The Tower of London, Peking
- Proper nouns always start with a capital letter.

Collective Nouns: These are words that refer to a group of nouns as one entity.
- Examples: herd (of cattle), pack (of wolves), flock (of birds), swarm (of bees), bed (of oysters), pride (of lions), school (of fish), brood (of chicks), litter (of kittens), crowd (of people), colony (of ants), troupe (of dancers), gaggle (of geese), troop (of monkeys)

Concrete Nouns: These are words for things that can be experienced by one or more of the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch).
