From Villages To Cities Long time ago people used to live in small clusters beside water sources and around farms. As the population started growing these clusters got bigger to form villages. A village is a small group of houses, farms, and other buildings. Villages are somehow small. People Built the early villages where there was water for drinking, washing, and cooking. The village site also had to be easily defended against enemies and safe from flooding. When the village grows so big, it turns into a town and then into a city. Some people could give up farming and more jobs will be created and more improvements will be done. Villages can become towns through a process known as urbanization, which involves growth in population, economic development, and infrastructure expansion. As more people settle in an area, the community may seek town status to gain more local control and access to resources. Comparing villages, towns and cities: Villages: A small settlement that can have between 100 and approximately 3,000 people. In the countryside- Some services such as a post office, a small shop and sometimes a small place of worship- There may be a doctors practice and a primary school - Many people are leaving villages to move to towns and cities. Towns: A mid-sized settlement that can have between 1,000 and 100,000 people. Services such as primary and secondary schools, train stations, hospitals and shopping centers- Large supermarkets and at least one place of worship. Cities: A city is a large settlement that usually has more than 100,000 people. Many different types of services, including universities, sports stadiums and a large variety of shops - Many restaurants, transport links and different places of worship- Many people move to cities because there are more opportunities for employment and leisure.
