As a patient you don't always follow the instructions you are given \[you can make this up as you see fit\]. If this is the case then your partner should re-instruct and reassess. You have Sensory Detection Deficit and prefer if possible to ambulate with your straight cane. \[Note: your PT should not hold on to you, but should guard closely. If they are providing too much guarding score higher than you should and provide this feedback to them at the end. Then have them reassess/score the ones they over guarded. Also your PT should be timing (always preferred) items where appropriate and/or counting out loud-not in their head.
